Cask (handpump) at the Evening Star, Brighton, on 1 March 2012. Dark brown/chestnut colour. Thin beige head. Strong groundy coffee in the aroma. Dry and coffeeish on the palate. Moderately burnt/roast mouthfeel. The coffee ratherdominated over any pilsner elements. Decent but not the most exciting Dark Star. Not sure this combination works perfectly.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 20 April 2012) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of freshly ground coffee, dark bread and roasted malt. Malty, roasted taste with fresh black coffee, dark rye bread, roasted grain and a generous coffee bitterness in the finish. Medium body, mainly dry. I wouldn’t really call it a pilsner, but it’s a nice dark lager with quite an impressive coffee character. Nice one.

[cask at the Caley Sample Room, Edinburgh] Black beer, thin off-white head. Nice mix of aromas – cold coffee and roasty porter. Starts right away like a coffee stout, before the pilsner’s lack of relative body arrives pretty quickly. That rapid finish is (by design) thin, yet also sweet, creamy mocha. Interesting stuff, and really rather nice

Cask at PSBH, 29th March 2012. Dark brown ale, good aroma, you get the cofee and malt. Follows though in the taste. Good beer, tried this next to the Dark Star Imperial, this in my view was far superior.

Cask - The Craft Beer Co, Clerkenwell, London. Poured with a foamy lasting one finger beige to light tan head. Somewhat like a lighter version of their espresso stout but crisper & firmer, no doubt due to the pils element. Nice filter coffee profile with good choccy, roasted maltiness on the tongue. Light to medium body, firm & spritzy mouthfeel with a lingering dry coffee aftertaste.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Aromas dominated by coffee. It tastes entirely of the coffee too (in no way a bad thing) but leaves a sour and sticky finish that vaguely ruins it... A mixed bag really, but an interesting concept.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask conditioned handpump Old Fountain London. A black beer with a whitish head. Obviously coffee in this. A good body. Low levels of hop flavour. A bit of grassy hop in the nose. Just tastes like a coffee porter rather than based on a Czech style. But whatever it is, it’s tasty.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Cask at the CASK Pub & Kitchen (London branch) on 9th March 2012. Clear dark brown with pale brown to off white foam quickly decaying to ring and film and leaving partial lacing. Roast, fresh coffee beans in aroma. Main taste is of rich roastiness - bitter with coffee beans, smokiness and chicory. Finish is richly malty with fresh-ground coffee and strong bitterness yet rounded and delicate. Engaging texture, thickish body. Outstanding.
