Cask Conditioned handpump The Rake Borough Market. A near black coloured beer with an off-white head. A warming, sweet boozy beer. Deep fruits, vinuous, tobacco notes. Strong and carpetty. There are banana notes also. Tends towards heaviness a little but itís a decent beer for sure.

Cask, Leicester Fest 10. Very dark brown with copper and a fluffy beige foam. Aromas are very earthy and rich with dark berries and caramel. Floral with liquorice and chocolate. Flavours are boozy and vinous with dark chocolate and roast malts. Marzipan with leather and some smoky notes. Sweetened grapefruit with peppery notes on the finish. Smooth on the palate, warming alcohol. Very nice.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 8, 2004 Rather similar to the Cottage Normanís Conquest (q.v.) that I tried just before this. A dark, rich and complex ale, with obvious roasted malt character, that drinks far easier than the alcohol content (which in this case was 7%) would suggest. An excellent drop, although go easy if you want to avoid falling over. Handpump, Head of Steam, London NW1, December 2003
RE:RATE at the Wenlock Arms, Dec 2004. The alcohol has been upped to 7.8% and the beer definitely seemed to have more oomph. Increased the score a little

A Mes rate:
Gravicask @ Planet Thanet. Black red colour. Chocolate malt aroma with nice alcohol notes and a little coffee. Sadly after what is a very pleasant nose its all down hill from there. Lots of nice stuff in there it just doesnt sit right and the alcohol is just too much. Palate is almost biting probably mainly due to the harsh alcohol. Each time I buy it I say this about it, now itís finally rated Iíll proabably leave it alone. Turn it off mum I donít like it.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask, handpump at The Grapes, Sunday 1st December 2013 whilst watching Mabel Gubbins (Morris Rapper side) and their entourage of 6-7 other sides dance in this and other pubs. Dark chestnut brown, with a small film of bubbles across the top. Rich, warming and perfect for the time of year. Fruity, as in Christmas pudding type fruits and very malty. There is a spiciness with this as well and whilst not too harsh the alcohol does show, perhaps served just a tiny bit warm, however I was still just a tad underwhelmed by this, its fine. On cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green - 28/01/12.
Dark brown in colour, verging on black with a little ruby hue around the edges when held to the light, topped with a small white/off white head.
On the nose a whiff of chocolate, liqourice and berry fruits.
On the palate a complex series of tastes, alcohol, malt, sugars, burnt sugar/malt flavours, faint chocolate notes dried berries, liquorice, maybe other spices thrown in, a little aniseed?
Full bodied beer, smooth on the palate.
Overall I was a little disappointed by Critical Mass, too much of a ípureí alochol flavour in the taste that wasnít disguised and built into the beer well enough in my opinion!

Gravity, Leicester 2011. Mahogany with a thin tan head. Bertie Bassett and Black Jack aroma. Sweet with roasted undercurrents; bit of a Belgian, black cherry and marzipan feel, burnt aniseed backdrop, confectionery. Slick and sugared, slightly decadent. Belgian body, English roast. Winner.
