Handpull at Southampton Arms. Deep, deep ruby, small foamy offwhite head. Sweet aroma of raisin and wildflowers. Taste follows, some black tea. Light body, dry, mild carbonation, sweet to start, tart in a quick finish. Interesting.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Via cask dispense at the Half Moon, Windlesham as ’Dark Star - Original’.
Pours a dark brown with a small white head which didn’t hang around too long.
Fruity nose from which I get prunes/dates/cherries and a hint of spice.
Roasted malts in the taste allied to the fruits and spices I’ve touched on above. Also get a nice toffee/biscuit flavour from this beer.
A bitter dry aftertaste follows but in a mellow way as there is some sweetness here also. My only complaint was that it was a little thin in the body, None the less one of the more enjoyable old ales I’ve had in recent years!

Pours dark brown with a bubbly head. Aroma of nutty
malts, caramel, dry fruits and chocolate. Taste is dark nutty and malty with some ripe dry fruits, chocolate and caramel. Finish is fruity and chocolatey. Quite tasty and rich for such a low ABV.

[cask, The Drapers Arms, London][as Dark Star Original] Pours a deep reddish black with a very thin head due to the southern style. Aroma is fruity – dark stone fruit – roasted malt and some toffee. Flavours are similar. It’s fantastically drinkable, I knocked back three pints in a sitting before I realised what had happened. Long, woody, bitter finish – really recommended (as is the Drapers Arms)

Eccellente old ale, molto leggera a dire la verità, e secondo me è più una porter. Malti tostato e luppolo in un connubio di rara perfezione!
