The brewery's eponymous CAMRA champion (won when Dark Star was brewed at Pitfield). A dark strong bitter with a hint of rich malt flavour from the caramalt. Brewed with crystal malt, caramalt and roasted barley.
See Pitfield Black Eagle.

Handpull at Southampton Arms. Deep, deep ruby, small foamy offwhite head. Sweet aroma of raisin and wildflowers. Taste follows, some black tea. Light body, dry, mild carbonation, sweet to start, tart in a quick finish. Interesting.

Via cask dispense at the Half Moon, Windlesham as ’Dark Star - Original’. Pours a dark brown with a small white head which didn’t hang around too long. Fruity nose from which I get prunes/dates/cherries and a hint of spice. Roasted malts in the taste allied to the fruits and spices I’ve touched on above. Also get a nice toffee/biscuit flavour from this beer. A bitter dry aftertaste follows but in a mellow way as there is some sweetness here also. My only complaint was that it was a little thin in the body, None the less one of the more enjoyable old ales I’ve had in recent years!

Cask @ The Fox, Haggerston. Deep brown in color with a tiny tan head. The nose is deep roasted chocolate and soft toffee. Rich wood poish and and sweet nuts. The taste iis much the same. Notes of hazelnut chocolate and bruised berry. Woody and rich. Soft body, very easy drinking. Velvety mouthfeel. Overall, pretty good!

Cask @ Kitty’s, Helsinki

Pours dark brown with a bubbly head. Aroma of nutty malts, caramel, dry fruits and chocolate. Taste is dark nutty and malty with some ripe dry fruits, chocolate and caramel. Finish is fruity and chocolatey. Quite tasty and rich for such a low ABV.

[cask, The Drapers Arms, London][as Dark Star Original] Pours a deep reddish black with a very thin head due to the southern style. Aroma is fruity – dark stone fruit – roasted malt and some toffee. Flavours are similar. It’s fantastically drinkable, I knocked back three pints in a sitting before I realised what had happened. Long, woody, bitter finish – really recommended (as is the Drapers Arms) [16032012]

Gravity cask @ In De Wildeman (as Original). Dark brown color, soapy head (not much). Aroma is full of red fruit, with some sweet fruit & some malty sweetness. Flavor is only lightly sweet, very fruity. Low carb. Finishes with roast and eventually bitter.

Cask in Craft Beer Co. Colour is dark ruby red. Nose is fruity English hops, caramel, black treacle, roasted malts and a distinctive farmyard smell. Taste is sweet and bitter, with some dark fruitiness, low carbonation.

Half, cask as Dark Star Original at Mason & Taylor, Bethnal Green. Shiny dark ruby body, naked surface. Inviting smell of chocolate and coffee. Fine blended taste profile of honeyed dark malts followed by bitter liquorice. Medium bodied. Nice (London, 31.07.2011).

Eccellente old ale, molto leggera a dire la verità, e secondo me è più una porter. Malti tostato e luppolo in un connubio di rara perfezione!
