cask @ The Magpie ,Brentford . An excellent dark ale , pretty tepid - you’re meant to drink this type of beer while playing chess and smoking a pipe . I didn’t do either but this beer was fucken good. Deep rich malt texture. chocolate, red wine, berries , coffee roast, burnt toast, dry roast - just a kick in the ass of floral resiny hops . A good beer to reflect the season .

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black with deep amber tints, thick white creamy head; roasted malt aroma; taste is also restrained dark malts, dark fruit, a hint of liquorice; soft and supple; delightfully mellow, all told.

My Bottom Line:
Comfy dark malts develop raisins and roast while leafy hops and their bitterness take care of the finish.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-There isn’t much foam atop the dark brown-hued darkness.
-The flavour profile is balanced but could be better defined. Flavors were a bit muddled, if I compare with the best of the Dark Star brews I’ve had.
-This wasn’t as drinkable as their other offerings. In the same ‘category’, I preferred their Old Chestnut. Then again, it might simply have been a question of cask tendering.
-The malt flavours have a great personality.
On cask at The Evening Star, Brighton.
