Cask by handpump at Hengler’s Circus, Glasgow - clear dark brown, medium bubbly beige head, good lacing, mild fruity and sweet malty aroma, toffee, fruity flavour, very sweet, easy to drink

On tap @ The William Morris, Hammersmith, London. Pours a deep ruby-hued brown body with a medium creamy off-white head. Nose is molasses, nuts, coca-cola, nougat and hints of caramel, chocolate and grains. Taste is caramel, molasses, nougat, nuts and hints of chocolate and grains. Light, near-watery body, soft carbonation. Pretty decent old ale, although it virtually begs for a couple of more percentages of ABV in my opinion, ensuring fullness of body and taste volume.

Pint of cask. Pleasant, easy drinking and inoffensive. It prefer it were offensive. Non descript but nice. Perhaps my taste buds have given up.

Cask from the West End, Ely. Black and opaque with a decent tan head. Scent of liquorice and blackberries, hints of gasoline and sage. Sweet taste, slightly herby and medicinal. Somewhat bitter/sour finish. Long black cherry and liquorice taste. Good, at the medium-to-low end of Dark Star’s stratospheric standards.

Cask at a Wetherspoons. Pretty much black with a red tinge, small scummy light brown head, full lacing. Nothing in aroma. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is pretty thin, lots of liquorice allsorts, not bitter but tangy in the finish, gluey resin, a touch meaty. OK.

cask @ The Magpie ,Brentford . An excellent dark ale , pretty tepid - you’re meant to drink this type of beer while playing chess and smoking a pipe . I didn’t do either but this beer was fucken good. Deep rich malt texture. chocolate, red wine, berries , coffee roast, burnt toast, dry roast - just a kick in the ass of floral resiny hops . A good beer to reflect the season .

Aroma: brad and caramel malts, prunes. Appearance: dark brown, clear, hardly any head. Taste: medium sweet. Palate: malty sweetness continues, some bitterness coming up, average to long-finish, bitter and dry. Overall: very nice, lovely taste. Pint at the London Drinker Beer & Cider Festival.
