Black beer with a fair light tan head. Great nose with aromas of coffee, chocolate and chocolate malt. Tastes primarily of ground espresso coffee beans with some chocolate again. Creamy mouthfeel and a little bitter. Very nice!

27/05/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (cask).

UPDATED: MAY 27, 2013 Cask conditioned handpump Evening Star Brighton. A black beer with an off-white head. Loads of coffee in this. Roasty flavours. Some chocolate in the nose too. I can recognise the quality but there might just be too much coffee in this for me. Score 3.9

Draught in The Signalman, Brighton - 1/4/11. Black beer. Coffee in the nose and taste(!). Earth in the nose as well. Smooth, delicious beer.

Cask @ Oliver Twist. Clear dark red-black with a small tanned bubbly head. Strong roasted aroma with coffee, wood and...vanilla? Taste is roasted bitter with notes of cold coffee, wood, berries and a pinch of bitter chocolate. Body is thin and only held up by the heavy bitter burnt taste. Carbonation is minimal.

UPDATED: MAR 26, 2011 Cask @ The Southampton Arms, London. Almost black colour, not much head. Treacle aroma. Strong coffee flavour. Smooth with bitter aftertaste. Not bad.

Cask at the Euston Tap. Opaque, dark brown pour with a light tan head. Bitter espresso and dark malt aroma. Flavor is really dominated by coffee grounds, with light sweetness and roastiness. Light to medium in body. I like the finish a bit more than the flavor. There’s a bit more malty sweetness here and the coffee flavor smooths out a bit. Lightly roasty with justs hints of ashy bitterness. Nice beer.

Dark brown body with tan head. Nose of roasted malts and chocolate. Nice smooth and creamy texture. The espresso is much lighter than other stouts. Nice taste of malts, caramel with some bitterness in the finish. Nice little number.

With a cheesy name like "Dark Star" Brewery, I expected the worst. Couldn’t be more pleasantly surprised. Unique burnt, foresty aroma Complex burnt/nutty/malty flavours are muted and balanced to make it as drinkable as any cola. Unlike others in its class, it’s distinctly neither bitter nor sweet. Shortfalls are slightly thin, flattens out fast, washing out the complexity, and slight sour aftertaste--which is fleeting. But perfect balance is why I give this super-smooth beer coffee-style beer a high rating. I drank this way too fast ...
