Bottle from Mr Lawrences wine merchants, Brockley. Pours dark brown with a light brown head. Aromas of light roast coffee, chocolate, caramel. Flavours of dark malts, coffee, some smoke. Bit earthy. Finishes smokey and bitter.

(growler from ChrisO) Aroma of newly grained coffen, even has that dusty feel to it. Taste is also coffelike, as in thin and cold, odd, when it seems to be more a coffen, than beer. Not nice to drink old, cold coffee.

Massive coffee nose, but the body was a bit too thin to off set such strong flavors I thought and the coffee just completely dominated everything. Big bitter finish. Easy enough to drink, but not sure how much I would really want.

Lasting tan head with wisps of lacing on a black body. Coffee on the nose as well as some burnt notes. Taste is the same, lovely roasted bitterness, some chocolate, good length and medium body for drinking plenty of.

500ml bottle (Gallows Bird, Espoo, Real Ale Festival 2009) - as ’Espresso’ 4.6%
Day 0: Massive espresso aroma, not much else. Espresso coffee in the taste too, but where’s the beer? Thinish body - where’s the beer? Another victim of the inane ’substitute coffee for beer’ trend. Real let-down after the pour. Shame to see one of my favourite brewers boob so.
