3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Ungstrup (23961) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - OCT 24, 2006
[Vintage 2005 - sampled October 2006] A dark brown beer with a red shine under a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and spices - amongst those anise, but also light notes of alcohol and berries. The flavor is sweet malty with light notes of roasted malt, anise, and alcohol. I don’t find much power - but the alcohol gets very present in the end - and burns slightly in the throat - and leaves You with a dry feeling.

Bottle from Pig’s Ear Festival 2008, vintage 2007, 3 years old Completely black color, with very small head. Aroma of molasses, tar, dark malts, some liquorice and old wood; oxidized probably. Good body structure; the roasted malt and chocolate are well blended together; there is a late impression of liquorice, tar and leather, also un underlying acidity. The bitterness is not very high. The alcohol is very well hidden. Quite elegant.
