Cask at The White Swan, Reading Street: Yup this is definately smoky. One of the more interesting beers I’ve tried in recent times. Quite hoppy with plnty of fruit. Really drinkable beer.

Tasted this in Blackfriers, Glasgow in December 2007.Cask, handpump dispense. Dark ruby in colour with dark amber highlights and a creamy buff head. Strong hickory wood smoke in the intense roast malt aroma. Smooth creamy mouthfel and good lacing. Dark malts give an initial roast malt flavour with coffee notes which then leads to a rich maltloaf base with syrupy dates. Very slight hint of spicy hop resins in the brief aftertaste. Sweet molasses and a dry liquorice flavour dominate the moreish finish. An excellent Smoke Ale and highly recommended.

Cask@Angleterre, Helsinki. Reddish amber colour with a mediumsized beige head. Aroma is dark fruits, mild smoke as well as some mild toasted malts. Flavour is being rather much the same, leaving a slight baconlike aftertaste.

[Cask at the Hobgoblin, Reading.] Amber with a loose cream head; smokey aroma - reminiscent of a wet autumn bonfire; assertive sharp bitter taste with an underlying smokiness; and a long bitter finish. Not sure I’m a fan of this style.

On gravity at the Portcullis, Bristol 14/12/08. Dark brown with plenty of reddish undertones and a moderate, off-white head. Lightly smoked aroma, with some dark fruit, caramel and a hint of citrus hops/ Flavour had some sweet honeyed malts, with a smoky edge, a touch of spice and a decent bitter finish. A very good English interpretation of the style.

Quite interesting very dark brown in colour. Taste starts with a well-rounded chocolate then a sharp, dry bitterness comes through. Very nice and worth seeking out.
