1.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20
500ml bottle. Red-brown colour with a thin head that did not last. Surprisingly watery, without any of the rich body or toastiness expected for a black beer. Disappointing.

1.6 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Bottle on 11/10/13 from Loco Liquor. Pours a dark brown, not quite black. Small quickly dissipating head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is lacking, almost that of a pale lager, metallic. Taste is pleasant at first then gets a bit sour, metallic. Not much in the way of roasted flavors you might expect from a black ale. Might not be able to tell this from a Black Label outside of the sourness. Seems a lot of the darker beers I’ve had from South Africa are plagued by this sourness. Body is very thin. As I continue drinking the metallic taste becomes more prominent. All in all not very good.

1.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 6/20
Bottle from Roeland Liquors, Cape Town. Pours an almost clean amber color, thin white head. Black? Porter? Not really. Aroma is full of unfermented sugars, strange malts and some yeast. Flavor is watery sweet wort, no alcohol, no body, nothing. I hope it was not supposed to be like this.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Opaque, dark amber in color; far more red than I expected given the name. Thickish head disappears quickly leaving little carbonation. Aroma is strong and pleasant, with hints of summer. Tastes malty and fruity. Very pleasing on the tongue, with a warming finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours opaque amber brown, not quite as dark as the name suggests. Little head, completely dissipated by the time I looked back after pouring, which is at odds with the description. Strong, sweet, roasty malt aroma. Less body than I expect for a porter. Rather dry for its sweet smell. Warming, though the % is not very high. Not bad.
