1.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Reddish brown to black pour with a short-lived coffee coloured head. Nose is of cheap chocolate and plastic, with a hint of hops. In the mouth it all falls apart. There’s a thin salty taste and a sourness that’s out of place and made me think it was faulty - but everyone of this brewery’s beers taste faulty. Milk chocolate, burnt malts, bitterness way out of kilter with the malt profile. At this point I’d just suggest that people steer clear of this brewery as they’re either careless or incompetent - either way, they make bad beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
550-ml bottle. The nose resembles that of a barley wine/brown ale with heavy date sugar, old toffee, semi-oxidized caramel malt, a hint of nutmeg and a slight nuttiness to finish. Pours nothing like the "blacker than black" description in the label; it looks like a standard brown ale with a clear caramel brown pour and no head. The taste is quite sweet with hazelnuts, mild brown sugar, roasted dates, and a hint of stale peanut butter. Middle of the road palate, with a slightly slick mouthfeel. It’s much closer in style to a brown ale than a porter. It wasn’t terribly good, but I don’t consider as horrible as some of these recent ratings.

1.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20
500ml bottle. Red-brown colour with a thin head that did not last. Surprisingly watery, without any of the rich body or toastiness expected for a black beer. Disappointing.

1.6 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20
Bottle on 11/10/13 from Loco Liquor. Pours a dark brown, not quite black. Small quickly dissipating head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is lacking, almost that of a pale lager, metallic. Taste is pleasant at first then gets a bit sour, metallic. Not much in the way of roasted flavors you might expect from a black ale. Might not be able to tell this from a Black Label outside of the sourness. Seems a lot of the darker beers I’ve had from South Africa are plagued by this sourness. Body is very thin. As I continue drinking the metallic taste becomes more prominent. All in all not very good.
