COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Often called "Oktoberfestbier," this amber lager is actually the classic style from Vienna, Austria. It has a bright copper color and a big body, but no obtrusive hop aroma as is often found in amber beers elsewhere. Enjoyed so much by the people of Bavaria that it eventually replaced the Dunkels as the beer of choice at Munich’s famed Oktoberfest.

Formerly Das Bierhaus Marzen

Pours a honey amber with thin white head. Aroma is very nutty with a toasted caramel note. Flavor is mild hazelnut with vanilla undertones. Also present is some bitter hop like presence. Body is light creamy mix with mild carbonation.

Pale orange yellow color. Sweet big malts followed by a liberal hop dosage. This is really hoppy for a Marzen, but in a good way. Light bodied, well balanced.

As part of a sampler at the brewpub. Caramel, nuts, similar to a nut brown ale. True to style, but frankly, fairly boring. Sometimes Octoberfest beers impress me. Not this time.

July 2nd, 2008 Sample platter. Smelt of bread that had been smoked. A redish, brown brew with a small head that disappeared promptly. Creamy smokey body and aroma. Excellent Marzen

On tap at the brewpub on 6/22/07: Pours a transparent dark golden with a thin ring of white head. Aroma of lightly sweet and toasty caramel malt with some noble hops. Body starts with a nice, light Vienna malty sweetness and a fairly full palate. Finishes with nice noble hoppy balance. A pretty good, and true to style Märzen.

On tap at the pub. Dark amber color with a light carmale nose and taste. Sweet with a little nuts and light hop undertones. That almost salty mineral taste is there as well, which the brewmaster informs me is from the local water.

After seeing Skyview’s raves, I decided to head down to Menomonie and check out Das Bierhaus for myself. I ordered the sampler, in which I got about 4 oz. each of all five of Das Bierhaus’ beers for the very reasonable price of $5. I have this one listed as "Das Bierhaus Märzen" (note the spelling difference). Relatively weak aroma of sweet, carmelized malts. Red grape scent. Pours an amber-tinted gold color with near white head. The liquid is mostly clear, but there is a slight haze. Classic Oktoberfest and caramel malt flavors. The red grape element is present in the taste as well as the aroma. Nice aftertaste. Light to medium body. Smooth but lively in the palate. It’s not a bad beer, but it’s forgettable. I should point out that Oktoberfest is one of my least favorite beer styles, and that tends to be reflected in my ratings. I think this is a good example of a style that I don’t particularly care for.

Visited Das Bierhaus for their official Grand Opening on June 30. This Märzen pours a clear golden amber brew with a very hearty thick off-white head. A slowly dissolving foam head and good lacing. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, some multi nuts (hickory nuts and almonds), sweet candy sugar, caramel and a hint of flowery hops. Taste is lightly carbonated, medium body, more caramel to the tongue, with hardly any bitterness. Finish is smooth, light and not as thick as most other Oktoberfests. Though the flavor and scents are present in this Märzen style beer.
