COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Fir Mandrin is our winter beer. Don’t be afraid of its thorns, it is sweet, almost sugary. When you taste it, you feel the freshness of the Fir tree followed by a sensation of heat due to the 8% of alcohol. It is doubtless a winter beer. The birth of the Fir Mandrin " My first tasting of the "sapinette" (bourgeons d’épicéa macérés dans de l’alcool et du sucre) has given me this idea of Fir Beer. It’s a sunday, during a familal walk in "Chartreuse", that I collected the first fir and "epicea" forns. The attemps were conclusives : I forgot the "épicéa", it was the Fir Tree wich has to be chosen for the new Mandrin beer. My choice concerning the malts was completed by a special sort of aromatic hops and then by fir thorns from the Vercors and the Chartreuse. The drying was insufficient the first year and the beer was acidic, the beer was loved by some people, displeasing to others. In 2004, we drew conclusions from the last production, it led us to create a sweet and balanced beer. As for the 2005-2006 production, it is almost perfect ! "

330mL stubby bottle in mini-Duvel tulip. Now this is an interesting beer, as the commercial description says, its a sweet beer with a spice. Well that is exactly what one gets. The beer has a sugary sweetness mixed with a orange yeast character and then a spice, its not spruce, it’s spruce-like... so its fir. It pours a cloudy orange-amber color with a medium head that fades at a normal pace. The fir does not offset the sweetness, its all just mixed together. I am not in love with the beer but I like what the brewer did, original and interesting. BB October 2010, batch #344.

probably one of the best of Mandrin’s brewery. I had this one several years ago. I will complete when I’ll drink it again.

Bottle at Churchkey, tasted side by side with the Noix. This one had maybe a bit of pine aroma if I use my imagination, but the taste is green apple skins. Interesting.

Bottle purchased in Paris. Orange/amber pour, off-white head. Sweet caramel malts, fruit, and piney spruce. Not very interesting of a beer despite. I am not a big fan.

Bottle 33cl. A cloudy amber beer with low head. Aroma is grainy, lightly toasted, with some fruit presence like honey and wood. A bit acid but drinkable, interesting but not exceptional.

Sweet malty nose, some caramel and a definite citrus/resinous note which I guess is fir mandrin. Lightly tart, lightly sweet taste, light acetic acid, but it’s very mild. Finishes with a good dose of citrus. Quite nice. Glad I didn’t get a bottle from the prior batch.

Bottle shared by ryan. Pours a hazy orange-yellow with a nice light tan head. Flowery fruity aroma with notes of apple, tropical fruit and citrus. Some must and funk. Flavor is moderately sweet, with spice, maybe coriander. Fruity with citrus and pineapple. Slight tartness with a bitter orange peel finish. Interesting beer. Slightly medicinal and the sweetness was a bit much for me, but otherwise a good beer.
