2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
[Cask at Volunteers Arms, GBBF, 2004] A hazy amber beer with no head. The aroma is of diacethyl - as if it hasn’t finished fermenting. The flavor is yesty and like unfermented wort, though with a slight bitter or more dry finish.

Light amber color. Earthy malt aroma. Mellow malty taste, ordinary bitterness, some aromatic hop but not impressive.

Cask Conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Amber coloured beer with medium head. A thin grainy flavour, poor malt note running to a peppery dry finish with a forced sweetness.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
A recreation of what was once upon a time a Birmingham standby from Aston Manor, via the Highgate brewery that they now own. This one grew on me. The colour is a standard bitter amber. Initially, this came over as a malty brew with a lot of residual sweetness. However, as time went on the true dry bitter nature began to emerge, especially on the finish. Overall though, I still found this a rather curious amalgam of the sweet malt and the dry finish. Intriguing, but not entirely satisfying. Pleasant enough though. Cask (handpump), Lord Moon of the Mall, Whitehall, London SW1.

A Mes rate: Cask at The Prince of Wales, Highgate.
Darker side of blonde with a slim white head and lots of lace. Heavily citric hoppy aroma. Almost astingent hoppy flavour. Very sharp. Slightly soapy. Blah.

[Cask conditioned] Amber coloured. Very weak aroma and flavour. A drinkable, but really boring and bland bitter.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2004 Davenport was a Birmingham brewery which operated from 1896 until taken over by Greenall in 1986. The beers were sold off to other breweries, eventually ending up under control of Carlsberg-Tetley who ceased production of Davenport Bitter in 1988. The Highgate brewery bought the rights to the Davenport beers in 2002, two years after they had been taken over by the supermarket canned beer producers Aston Manor. Even though owned by Aston Manor, Highgate retain some independence over their real ale production. This is a pleasant, fruity, amber coloured bitter. There is a damp knickers aroma crossed with damp wood. The taste is fairly earthy with green pear tones. A slight citric tang starts to come through, developing strongly into the after-taste along with some dusty hops and a sprinkling of salt. Cask conditioned at the Tudor Rose, Upnor. [2.8]
Frog & Toad. On a day of bad beers this one came up trumps. Copper coloured session biter with white foam head. Perfumy dry. Starts slow, but then orange flavours come through - light at first, quite soft and juicy, but gathering pace it becomes tangy like marmalade. Hop flavour returns very late in the finish. Builds up a good head of steam this one.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2007 Feb 07 Cask conditioned @ Humble Plumb, Soton. Much better today. Fruity sweet malts and some earthiness. Fairly drinkable but quite unimpressive 2.7
May 04 Cask conditioned @ JDW, Winchester. Overwhelming, unexpected banana aroma. Some sweetness and medium bitter finish. Upon closer examination stale notes and funky yeast. 2.0
