COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A dark reddish-black porter that draws you in with a tempting aroma combining roast malt with classic English hops. Some initial sweetness gives way to a mouthful of berry fruit and roast malt flavours and a well-rounded bitter finish. An approachable, not too heavy Porter. The name harks back to the history of coal mining in the area around the brewery. You can see the remnants old Pit Head buildings from the brewery approach. What’s in it? Maris Otter, Wheat, Black, Roasted Barley, Colour 400 Crystal Malts from Warminster Maltings Pilgrim, Fuggles whole hops from Charles Faram of Malvern Burtonised water, yeast, finings

@ George, Croscombe. Very dark brown. Rich dark liquoricey character with light fruitiness. Fruity, liquoricey and lightly chocolatey. Excellent creamy, balanced porter.

Cask-conditioned at the Portcullis, Clifton, Bristol May 2010. Near black in colour with a thin, tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate and berry fruit. Flavour had more chocolate, roasted malts and a dryish finish. Very enjoyable.

Cask @ The George Inn, Croscombe. Dark brown-black with scattered lacing. Lovely aroma is ink and asphalt. The body is fruitier, with good roast and some black licorice. Finishes mellow and smooth with a soft and silky mouthfeel. Very good.

Pours a deep, dark brown body to a bright shiny surface. Sweet dark malts in aroma in the direction of brittle caramel. Blended flavour of roasted chocolate malts and dark, bitter fruits added by hints of bitter liquorice. Discreet bittersweet ending. Easy to drink after a heavy dinner at CASK Pub and Kitchen, where my half pint was hand pulled from cask (London, 15.07.2010).

Cask at the CASK Pub & Kitchen on 16th July 2010. Dark ruby with thin pale brown head that laces with quick drinking. Malty, slightly tarry notes with sour cherry fruit. A seriously bitter aftertaste ensued, lingering on the roof of the mouth with a hint of smoke. Texture is smooth to light initially, turning a tad watery late on. Quite a lot happens in this porter and it grows on you.
