COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An American style stout with a moderate hop bitterness and a surprisingly medium-light body. We start by using caramel and roasted barley malts and mash at a lower temperature that is common for this style. We then use American hops to balance the bitterness to make a unique flavored dark beer.

Draft at the brewpub from notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, thin black coffee, dark chocolate notes, earthy hops. I realize this is not imperial, but it seems a bit thin for a stout. More like a porter or black ipa.

Taster on tap at the brewery. Labeled 5.6%; IBU. Near black color. Clear dark red around the bottom edges. Thin tan head, leaves good thicker lace. Good bigger earthy hop, kind of piney. Dark chocolate malt, bigger roast, light hints of coffee, light burnt malt notes. Good moderate to bigger bitterness, light to moderate sweet. Smooth, lighter, kind of crisp carbonation, good chewiness. Lightly slick finish. A solid, roasty, sort of hoppy-earthy stout. Drinks close to a black IPA, and big flavor for the ABV. Some cola and dark fruit comes out further in.

Draft to taster at the brewery. Looks good; black with light beige lacing. Smells and tastes sweet and roasty with a heavy dark malt presence. Average on the palate. Solid beer.

Draft, in a flight at the brewpub. Very odd, off-putting aroma. Chemical even. First sip is equally awful. Sour, medicinal aspect with an ounce of anise. Clearly not a good effort here, or a flawed batch. Either way, bad way to top off an unimpressive visit. (#4949, 2/28/2013)

Draft sample. Poured black color with an average fizzy brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Medium roasted coffee and malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium roasted sweet coffee flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Good and my expectations where met.

Nice dark brown with a tan head. Nice aroma of coffee and roasted malt. Great roasted coffee bean taste with a creamy mouthfeel. Trends to the dry side. Well done.
