Burial at Sea is a collaborative project between head brewerís Jeff Hancock of DC Brau and Stephen Jones of Oliver Ales in Baltimore, MD. Mild ales are traditionally referred to as "session ales" known for their low alcohol content which is around 3.2 - 4.0%. Despite their low alcohol content, Milds are just as flavorful as beers with a higher ABV. In crafting this beer we used only the finest maltís and hopís from England. Burial at Sea starts with a great malty nose boasting aromas of milk chocolate and biscuity sweetness. The beer has a medium mouthfeel that drinks with a soft, mineral smoothness and just enough hops to counter the chewy malt character. Fermented with a clean American yeast that lets the oats, barley and hops dominate and take center stage. With DC Brau we decided to brew a red mild, 7bbls at Oliverís, 30bbls at DC Brau using the same recipe and yeast (Wye yeast 1056 American Ale yeast) for both. The only significant difference other than batch size is that Oliverís was fermented in open vessels and DC Brauís in closed vessels. This makes a side by side tasting of both cask and draft from each brewery an interesting prospect indeed!

From cask at Churckey, version had French oak in the cask. Pours hazy brown with a small off white head. Aroma is fruity, toasted malty and light breadish malty. Flat malty, light fruity and caramelish. Dry, no sweetness. Why cask condition beers that wasnít meant to be cask? Flat and malty.

Cask handpull. Variegated golden brown color, small white head, delicate lacing. Aroma of spiced and peppery butterscotch. Taste is similar with subtle lemon. Nice.

Cask. Clear amber body, small beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, earthy/pine, some malt. Taste is moderately sweet, bread, some but, earthy/pine, light raisin. Light-medium body, low carbonation.

Tap at PSA. Pours clear brown with a small, fizzy off-white head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is biscuit and straw malt, light fruity esters and earthy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with light hops, medium bitterness and a dry finish. Light body, warmth and carbonation.

Served on draft at Beer Run. 5300th rating! Pours a dark hazy brown color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toasted malts, herbal hops and a tart note. The taste is bitter hops, caramel and toasted malts. Medium bodied, high carbonation. Nice beer.

On tap at Pratt. Pours a hazed amber ruby brown with a thin beige head. Soft malt, a touch nutty, sweet crackery malt. A touch metallic, malt and toast. Sweet malty, very easy drinking. Nice body, smooth and malty. Really nice.

From brewery. DC Brau version. Poured a slightly hazy, but mostly translucent light brown, reddish color. Small off-white head? Aroma was mostly light malts, touch nuttiness. Flavor was about the same. Interesting - pretty session-able.

Regional Food and Drink, DC tap ($6.50): Pours a murky light brown color with a similar head. Aroma is mostly malty, but in a very good way. Body of the beer is the real upside. It has a really soft mouth feel, so the beer goes down very easily; however, there is nothing lacking in the taste of this beer either. Really nice full malty flavour throughout with a kiss of hops. A very well crafted brew.

Tap @ Pratt St. Pours clear, nutty brown with thin, creamy off-white head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is hazelnut, toasted malt, caramel, earthy hops, and fig. Flavor is malt forward, medium hops, and light fruit esters; dry, crisp finish. Light body and warmth with medium carbonation.

On tap at Pizzeria Paradiso. Nice grainy aroma, roasted barley and very light hops. Biscuit and light caramel. Mainly, it smells like mash. Dark golden amber with mild haze, with thin off-white head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts a bit sweet with raw malt/grist notes, light floral hop bitterness. Finish is medium bitter with light sweet nutty notes. Decent mild.
