4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Travlr (7984) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - NOV 20, 2011
Draft at DC Brau. Pours very dark maroon, medium brown head with fair retention and good lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee, dates, prunes, dark cocoa. Taste is dark fruits in a background of roasted malts. Subtle and understated with lots of character. Finally, a porter that isn’t a chocolate syrup bomb. A successful collaboration, I think.

[Draft @ Smith Commons] Dark brown / black with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, light pine, caramel, cocoa, and light spices. Taste of much the same, with spices toned down a bit, some tobacco, and piney hops with a dry finish. Light alcohol

Growler from the release, thanks to travlr! Pours a dark brown with a small head. Nose holds dark fruit, roasted malt, and coffee. The flavor brings more plum, vanilla, and mocha. Quite nice.

Pours black, with a tan head. No light escapes. The smell is roasty caramel and some light date aroma. Tastes a little roast, a little fruity, and has a bit of baking chocolate thrown in. Vanilla? Perhaps. Feels fantastic, no doubt about it.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a dark color, almost black in the dim light of Churchkey, but when put up against the light, it’s a maroon, dark ruby red color. The head is small, and tan. Aroma is roasted malts, with notes of dried fruits (prune, date almost). Flavor is roasted, notes of dried fruits. Pretty enjoyable.

Growler filled at the brewery on 11/23/11. Pours a DEEP mahogany with a thick and creamy mocha head. Chocolate syrup, cocoa, caramel, candied sugar, roasted coffee, lactose, and vanilla beans in the aroma. Medium-bodied and kinda creamy here and there. Sweet caramel, milk chocolate, and candied sugar upfront taste-wise. Some bitter dark chocolate and roasted coffee towards the end. The finish is a tad dry. There is a yeasty/acidic tanginess all the way through.

RFD, DC 12oz ($6.50): Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is pretty much straight chocolate porter. I didn’t catch much Belgian yeast in this house. Taste is mostly chocolate with hints of espresso and plenty of roasted malt. This was good, but I was expecting something more unique and complex.
