Penn Quarter Porter is our first in a line of draft-only limited-release beer, and itís a robust porter! In the way that The Public is on the line between a pale ale and an IPA, this is on the line between a porter and a stout - with chocolate notes and a dry, roasted finish.

$1.95 can from Wine Warehouse, CHO. Pours dark brown, nearly black, with a tiny quickly disappearing brown head. Smells of chocolate milk and coffee. Taste: First sip: interesting and different! Chocolate, nuts, roasted chestnuts. Bitter coffee finish. Extra point in taste for being different, but not a favorite.

Deep cola-colored beer with a medium foamy dark beige head. Bitter roasted nose of unsweetened cocoa, dark coffee, and a bit of smokiness. Flavor is rich, but milder than the aroma would indicate. Itís definitely more on the bitter side with burnt chocolate and coffee thatís evaporated in the pot most prominent. It could use a bit of sweetness to counter balance it, but overall a pretty good beer.

12oz can from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors. Darkest brown with a lacy light beige head. The aroma is nice and rich, loads of molasses and anise with dark bakerís chocolate and roasty malts. The flavor has mild sweetness yielding to an earthy, chocolatey, bitter finish. Thick and slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Pretty solid beer.

Super nice porter. Overall just solid. Think of what you want from a porter, and this guy has it. Thereís nothing here that will bring out attention, but nothing that will warrant a demerit either. Good stuff.

Bottle @ home, via rotbox. Pours a very deep brown appearance with a lasting dark brown head. The aroma has a lot of roast, some smoke, coffee, chocolate, and lots of earth. Moderate light sweetness and moderate bitterness. Medium full body. Roasty chocolate flavor with a hint of fruitiness on the back end. A little bit of burnt sugar / caramel. Not all that bad.
