Tripel brewed for hobby brewers De 3 Vaten from Ekeren, of which the inhabitants were once called ’bierpruvers’ (beer tasters) because several breweries used to be active there. Irregular, off-white, partially collapsing head, colour a light peach blonde, half clear with a nice central column of fine bubbles, milky after adding the yeast deposit with large protein clouds. Strong aroma with lots of fruity yeastiness and caramelly maltiness, impressions of orange, mandarin, green apple, pineapple, mango, sesame seed, fried eggs, meat broth, jute, gingerbread, parsil, rubber, cheese and sulphur. Taste kicks off with a sweetish fruitiness and subtle acidity, as well as a kind of fresh orangey taste vaguely reminiscent of freshly prepared orange juice; then quickly becoming yeasty on a mellow maltiness, proteins, soft and rounded mouthfeel, some tingy notes of gingerbread spices, so far so good. The finish, however, is rather ’dead’, some mild leafy hoppiness quickly fading away, a bit of cloying sweetness, dusty yeast and slightly astringent alcohol - and then I forget the astringent solvents also emanating. In short: starts off okay, but anything which can go wrong in the finish, does effectively go wrong. Shame.

33cl bottle @ home shared with my dad. Hazy a bit murky yellow to orange color, medium sized lightly off-white head that disappears fairly quickly. Smell malts, a bit sweet, fruits: some apple and pear. Taste malts, again a decent fruityness with apple and pear and maybe a slight hint of peach, some sugar and a little bit of yeast. Medium body and carbonation. Quite decent, better than expected.

Medium off-white head over hazed gold to orange-ochre beer. Bit cheesy, parsley or other, if faded, garden herbs. Greenery, caramel malts, but also sulphur components. Yeasty, crude. Thick, yeast, protein-filled. Typical Boelens’ stamp. Not my taste.
