(Bottled, 0.75l, from De Prael brewery, Amsterdam) Slightly hazy amber with a medium, firm head. Aroma of nutty and clearly somewhat smoked malt - but not much else. Smoky-peaty-tarry-malty flavor with some caramel and salty seaweed. Alcohol is fully hidden. Almost medium body with medium carbonation. Not even close to a dubbel, except by the ABV. Instead, it’s a light-bodied and very easily drinkable, slightly whisky-peaty-smoke-tar-flavored beer with enough alcohol to make a fisherman dizzy. Not that bad, if you don’t think it as a dubbel (should be listed as Smoked, IMO).

0,25 l fles. Bagger bier. Een slechte abbey dubbel.

75 cl bottle, best until 2005. Aroma has raspberry and a touch of smoke. Flavor has milk chocolate. Lightly smoked with hints of sourness, consisting of mustard and vinegar, cinnamon and caramel. I’m not impressed, in spite of the (limited) use of smoked malts. Lacks balance.

Large beige a bit fizzy head. Dies very fast, the appearance becomes boring. The body is dusty even muddy amber. Smells medicine and bandage. Some sweet cookie and spices come through. Tastes medicine and rubber. Burnt finish. Medicine and even some metallic alcohol remain in the aftertaste as the burnt flavor fades. Lacks body, very thin. Shares the same unpleasant qualities with the Noorderzon. Both bottles were bought at once. Shall try them again some time later and re-rate.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2006 re-rate: Bottled. After the first disappointing bottle I decided to let the second one mature a little. With success. The apearance was less worse and the flavors were even more unbalanced as before. So operation succeeded but the patient died. Nov 6h, 2005, 2.3: Bottled. Aroma is dominated by several spices like zoethout (english?), licorice, and clove. Cloudy, orange brown, orange/beige head that disappers fast, no lace. Sweet, light bitter, hint of sourness, lots of spices like mentioned in the aroma, more bitterness in the finish, pretty yeasty. Has a homebrew character that I don’t like.
