330ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, amber colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. The citrusy and fruity hoppy portion of the aroma is in conflict with the smoke malt background of the for the rest caramel malty basis - apples and ashes somehow; furthermore the smoky notes display a peaty bias, thereby carrying unpleasant hints of TCP and sticking-plaster. Taste is slightly sweet fruity, smoky and caramel malty, hints of baked apple; minimally bitter, tart-ish and citrusy hoppy overtones don’t fit in the grid exactly. Well...

On tap at Proeflokaal Arendsnest in Amsterdam. Cloudy dirty copper body, medium beige head with good retention. Aroma of stone fruits and leather, spices, yeast, rye and grapefruit zest. Spicy taste with plenty of rye and grapefruit zest, some pine needles, oranges. Very faint smokiness, but overall a very decent brew.

Aroma of malt, rye, tea, smoke, herbal notes. Flavour is moderate sweet with a light to moderate bitter finish. Not much of an IPA, but it’s a pleasant smoked rye beer.

For a smoked IPA, this is a relatively well balanced beer. Amber colored, light smoke aroma, some light astringency at the end. Tried at the Arendsnest in 2014.

Tap @ In De Wildeman with Plaas. Amber color, hazy. Very steady off white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma: nice smoke from the glass, along with hoppy acidity and some caramel retronasal. Flavor is moderate bitter with some malty sweetness and a light fruity sour. Medium bodied. Rather dry bitter finish. A very nice surprise!

Tasted like a modest IPA, with some mild taste of smoke. Could be a bit more exciting.
