I had no idea what I was ordering in La Trappist, Brugge on 31st Jan 2014, but at 6% ABV this was the weakest beer on-tap and as I’d never had it before I chose to try it: glad I did. I’m no expert on Belgian IPA’s but this came across as a very drinkable beer indeed. Came slightly cloudy, orange to light amber in colour with a good white head. The aroma was floral with a citrus lead, pink grapefruit and something more tropical and sweeter. The taste was also citrus led, again grapefruit came to mind, with yet again a sweeter feel within the flavours. The finish was leaning towards bitter, but didn’t quiet make it the whole way. Interesting and different, glad I picked it out.

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2014 Fruit, épices. Belle amertume. Une ipa bien équilibrée. Une des rares réussites belges du style.

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2014 Hazy ambery golden with a small white head. Aroma of citrus fruits, yeast, tropical fruits, caramel, light spices and plenty of hops. Flavour is moderate fruity sweetness, hoppy. Finish is dry, yeasty and hoppy bitterness. Remarkable balanced, wonderful marriage of Belgian fruity/spicy and IPA hopbitterness. A true favourite.

Bottle from Dranken Pauwels. Light orange colour, slightly cloudy. Big bubbly head. Aroma is very floral, grapefruit, like a kernel. Taste is similar, lots of grapefruit, very fruity, juicy! Not overwhelmingly bitter, but just enough.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2014 0,33l fles thuis.

6% 460 yen from Tanakaya. An IPA from Belgium. Imported by Ezo Beer. It pours a cloudy honey gold with a thick fluffy foamy head & a wonderful floral hop aroma. Minty, herbal & floral notes in the nose maybe a touch of white grapes? The taste is but underwhelming, milky sour (lactic notes?) general bitterness with a few fruity qualities to it & some mild ascerbic qualities as well but nowhere near as nice as the nose. Nose 7, taste 5, appearance 3, palate 3.
