29/06/2011 33cl bottle @ home - BB: 2/2009 (2011-290)

Little cloudy orange to copper red beer, off-white creamy head, stable & adhesive. Aroma: sweet malts, caramel, candi sugar, curaçao, bit fruity, basement yeast. MF: soft carbon, full body. Taste: roasted malts, mocha to coffee even, surprising for a beer of this colour. Also sweet malts, camp fire smoke, dark chocolate. Aftertaste: mocha & citrus, fruits, oranges, little bitter ending. Alcohol is noticeable in the end.

Bottle from Bruisin’ in Asheville. Pours amber, slightly hazy with a soft, two-finger head that won’t quit, leaving lace all behind it. Nice. Nose is dusty, estery, slightly woody, and earthy, with dark summer fruits and peach pits fighting through to be heard. Taste hits as smoky at first, though that note faded closer to the bottom of the glass. Spicy grains; I’m thinking rye. A bit of pepper. Odd beer: complex and unique at first, a bit simple for a bit, but settling into a nice, slightly spicy, fruity ale by the end. Grew on me.

Bottle from Frank Smith’s. Pours turbid orange with 1-finger frothy white head that is loud enough to say, "I may be in a green bottle, but you suck". Nose is sour mashy fruit, funky yeasty cobwebby esters, hops. Tastes yeasty rock sugary malty, rauchy, with pronounced rauchy elements, some fruitiness, and sweet malty notes throughout. My tulip glass looks significantly oranger than the dark straw/canary edged colored glass in the photo.

bottle. murky light brown with large, fluffy beige head. spicy, peppery aroma. flavors of peppery hops, rye i think, some soft light fruits like pineapple and canned peaches. the faintest hint of smoke. light bodied with a lively texture and carbonation but also syrupy.

I like it when bottles come w/ labels written only in the original language like you this one. You can really taste the authenticity it adds. The particular bottle of this I got had apparently been stored upside down for some length of time because there was a yeast cake formed on the cap rather than the bottom of the bottle like you’d expect. I opened it over the sink for caution’s sake but there were no problems whatever. It pours a cloudy orange color w/ a bit of a raspberry red hue. The head is of large bubbles and is quickly dissipating. The nose is rather tart and fruity, a bit of pineapple and berries, plus a warm spice cake overtone. The carbonation is sharp and bracing which seems to sort of clash w/ an earthy bitterness. The carbonation masks most flavors but from what I can tell this is slightly tart and medium dry. It is not a bad beer but it’s just a little out of whack texture-wise and that is preventing me from enjoying it fully. Oh well.

12 oz green bottle. Pours a murky orangeish brown. It is pretty carbonated and produces a large off white head that dissipates with some decent lacing. The smell of this one is intense. It has a pinch of skunk but not too much. There is a huge barnyard funk going on with it, it smells a lot like brett. There is some underlying fruitiness as well. But mostly it is a bretty beast. The taste has a good amount of brett as well. There is some fruitiness as well. But the main flavor is a nice malty smokiness with hints of cocoa. Some people say the Bamberger Rauchbiere have hints of bacon, I would say this one has more of it though it is faint. The mouthfeel is good, slightly creamy. Overall it is a quirky but good beer. translucent tan, beige thin white ring. Lots of old smoke, like the revolutionary war exhibits you see in 7th grade, or the elephants and hay at the zoo. embedded or something. also light tea. Flavor is smokier, fresher, 1943 cockpit mixed with a strong citrus, particularly in finish, almost biting and thinning. Light smoke through, chalky flaky body. Decent, nice smoke, tale of two centuries I guess.
