Pours almost black with foamy white head. Aromas of peat, tar, licorice, and plum. Flavors are the same plus caramel, black pepper, and alcohol. Finish is long, fairly sweet, and smoky. Really nice.

Gekocht in Baarle.

(backlog 2013, post BBf, Pa’s Bday treat) bottle 66cl, Geers. Massive amounts of trademark Ardbeg briny peat, outright charred smoke and ash have perched and then infiltrated this gentle Belgian dark ale to the core and made it into an Islay beer. Some plum and underdosed chocolate buried underneath, defenseless yeast subtlety struggling to breathe underneath that ashy oak. Brave and bold barreling experiment that is maybe best left unopened in its beautiful red wrapping paper for a few more years?

I like my Islay malts, but this is full on! Super ashy, treacle like. Some biscuit and toffee as well as stewed fruits but then a raining deluge of ashy residue smashes the tongue. Not nuanced. Fun, but in small doses.

caesar (5469) - Bunnik/Utrecht, NETHERLANDS - JUL 16, 2014
UPDATED: JUL 17, 2014 Bottled from Mitra Bunnik, batch Sept 2013, large sample, served in a tulip glass. Almost clear dark brown color, short frothy head. Aroma of some chocolate and dark malts, slight spicy yeast, and quite a lot peaty ardbeg whisky. Slight sweet in taste, bit dry. Ardbeg overpowers the base beer quite a lot, without being harsh and dry peated, though it is still a lot of peat. Basebeer is apparently not powerful enough to carry the dominating peat. Ok stuff, but I think the Ardbeg fits stronger imperial stouts better.

Bottle. Aroma is peaty, smoke, medicinal, earthy, gobo. Interesting, boozy, smoke, and all the rest. Slightly sweet black treacle.

Uber over the top peaty nose. Licking an ashtray in a smoker’s compartment in a train, while someone cooks meat over charcoal would be much more subtle than this. The base beer is totally lost. The mouth is equally a shit with some sweet malt, but fuck that. Gross, unbalanced and pretty much undrinkable.

Habanero (2881) - Tranbjerg, DENMARK - JUN 4, 2014
Bottled. Pours clear, deep amber with a small, beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, wood, chocolate, caramel, dried fruit and whiskey notes, Sweet flavor that ends up dry with some bitterness. Medium bodied, watery to oily texture and soft carb. An excellent brew.
