Bottled (66 cL) from Biernavigatie.nl. Bottle date August 2012, bottle nr. 8937. Label is from regular Embrasse, but additional sticker and card says Ardbeg Islay whisky-barrel. In contrast to current Ratebeer database it states 10% ABV. Very dark brown colored, medium lasting brown head, beautiful. Very powerful nose, Islay whisky, peat, iodine, smoke, medicinal even, is there actually beer in here? Smoked flavor, earthy, then lots of malts, together with iodine. Lasting finish, astringent, very earthy, bitter and liquorice. Extremely full-flavored, almost pure Islay whisky, which i like. But then again, that may also be the downside of this beer: why not just take an Ardbeg whisky if you’re in the mood for something like this? Still, i like it a lot. But one piece of advice: share your bottle, a bottle this size is too much to finish yourself.

Murky middling brown, thin sandy head. Nose is gritty dark berry, nice peatiness and smooth roast. Initial taste is plum and rich peaty. Busy enough carbonation and sticky mouthfeel. Finishes softly sweet, neat caramelised buzz and a soft rolling tobacco smokey linger.

Aged 4.3 years. Smoke throughout, more (and with floaties) in the finish. Dark colour. Sour, peaty aroma. Maybe diminished on ageing? Smooth nouthfeel.

One of the elaborations of Embrasse, the Dochter’s quadrupel style ale, this one having been aged in Ardbeg barrels. Deep reddish bronze, hazy colour under a dense, frothy, yellowish beige head. Aroma has chocolate, bayleaf, caramel, banana, candied dates, caramel, medlar, overripe pear and wood, but is totally dominated by a very strong iodine smell representing the peat - way too much for my taste, I have nothing against peated whisky, but I cannot say I enjoy the smell of iodine. Sweet, candied taste, dates, banana, candied orange, very soft, full and ’fluffy’ mouthfeel, honeyish and caramelly malts, some earthy hops in the finish, drying woody tannins, a glow of warming whisky-like alcohol, lingering malt sweetness and even candi sugar sweetness, but most of all, that peat - iodine aroma returning retronasally - and ruining it for me. Interesting and complex for sure, but way too much iodine for my taste, reminding me of a Laphroaig barrel aged imperial stout from Jopen, which had the same illness.
