COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Wrapped bottle, striped red paper with sticker "Peated whiskey cask" on the lower right end of the "logo"
An 9% ABV beer in which the fermented sugars were all obtained from malt (20 degrees Plato). A generous dose of hops and a long maturation time makes this beer best of the best. This beer is bottle conditioned and will go through taste evolution during many years. Selected by the brewer from his best peated whisky casks. Matured for a quarter of a year. Winner of the Zythos Beer Festival (ZBF) consumer prize 2011. (Translation by Martinus)

Bottle thanks to Bruce at ChrisO. It pours deep cloudy amber-brown, with a thin light beige head. The nose is sweet dark fruit, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, yoghurt, malt backbone and oak. The taste is blackberry, over-ripe blueberry, roasted malt, sweet caramel, oak and some light whiskey notes (but not as much as expected), with a dry, lightly spicy finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and somewhat creamy mouth-feel. Hides the alcohol well. Not bad.

Nice black pour. Smell has more of the orinigla brew than i was expecting. Nice dark fruitiness, belgian spice, but a nice bit of peat and oak. The flavor is great. Embrasse all the way, chocolate, spices, dark fruit, nice coffee bitterness, great scotch and peat smokiness. A beast. Not too alcholic either.

I’m not crazy about peat, even in whisky, but this was a pleasant surprise. Here the peat adds an accent to the berry, anise, candied orange notes of the Embrasse; the smoke is a subdued, lingering thing. Restrained sweetness, a big round beer with a lot going on but nothing sticks out too far. A pleasure.

Penso che a fine serata al villaggio un mio compagno me l’abbia portata almeno tre volte di fila, good very good...

(750ml bottle thanks to Walt at RBWG) clearish rich orange-amber with wispy tan bubbles. Nose of bandaid, astringent, caramel, very medicinal. Taste of bandaid, cherry, medicine, caramel, plastic, weird for me. Sticky/oily body and linger.

Deep copper/ruby pour with a thick, lomglasting head. Extremely complex and intense nose of sherry, pralines in cream, huge peat, overripe dark fruit (figs, dates, raisins) walnuts, toffee, vanilla and oak, and earthy hops. Nice lacing, and a very heavy, almost syrupy body that delivers a mouth-coating finish. Taste is even more complex with all of the above plus raisins and even bleu cheese. This beauty reminds me of NC Old Stock Ale if it had been aged on peated oak. Absolutely my new, hands down favorite smoked beer.

Brown coloured beer with small off-white head and only few carbonation. Roasted malty aroma, coffee, whiky hinted. Full slight sparkling palate. Finish is roasted bitter spicy. Very nice one.

660 ml bottle, bottled November 2011, bottle #4316. The card attached to the bottle says this was aged in Connemara Whiskey casks. Served in a DFH Signature Glass, the beer pours a reddish/brown color with an inch tan head that stays around for a long time. There’s also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, it smells like dark fruit, peat/smoke, caramel, and some sweet spices. The taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like peat/smoke, dark fruit, dark bread, and some dark chocolate. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s creamy and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I think this is a pretty good overall brew. Even at $14.99 a bottle, I’d certainly buy this again in the future.
