An 9% ABV beer in which the fermented sugars were all obtained from malt (20 degrees Plato). A generous dose of hops and a long maturation time makes this beer best of the best. This beer is bottle conditioned and will go through taste evolution during many years. Selected by the brewer from his best peated whisky casks. Matured for a quarter of a year. Winner of the Zythos Beer Festival (ZBF) consumer prize 2011. (Translation by Martinus)

{thoughts} Unfortunately shy aroma compared to the other versions. Beyond that, everything integrates well in a uniquely peaty experience.

{elements} Garnet-brown hue; thick, tan froth. Shy aroma of peat, vanilla, coffee and toasted walnuts. Moderate-heavy sweetness, light acidity, light-moderate acidity; smooth roast, chocolate and peat with the peat continuing well into the aftertaste. Creamy texture, soft carbonation, medium-full body. 22 oz bottle @ GP Tuulensuu.

Wow, amazing Scotch whisky aroma - have never had this in a beer before. All the smoke and essence of Islay comes through. Pour is pretty good - dark brown with light tan head. On flavor, I want to like this more than I do. I feel like thereís a hole in the middle of the flavor profile somehow. That said, still pretty good, and the Scotch side counts for a lot in this one. Definitely unique.

Bottle, bottled 27/7/2011. Thx to Mathieu87. APPEARANCE: clear brown beer, small stable beige head. NOSE: peated, chocolate, malts. TASTE: peated, smoked, chocolate, more balanced than a young one!

Bottle. #15408. A slow gusher, pouring an almost clear body, amber in color and with a dense, fingerthick light beige colored head. Lacings. The aroma has quite a lot of peat, with dried fruits and a roasted touch. Some chocolate notes. Thereís a pleasant bitterness in the flavor, dealing easily with the malty sweetness. Peat, dried figs and a peated, roasted maltyness in the flavor. Full body and a nice carbonation level. Some warmth. Lasting finish with lots of peat. A nice one indeed, tasteful too, but I prefer the regular edition. Might be because Iím not very fond of peat, but I donít think so as I normally prefer the regular edition. 141228

500ml bottle shared in a Struise glass. Pours a thick dark brown colour with a voluminous beige head which last a long time (which is handy as this is the ultimate sipper). Aroma is too strong for me. I have had to mark this down for that. Initially once the bottle is opened I got rotten vegetables. However, pleasingly once the beer has been opened for a few minutes this aroma disappears and gives way to huge quantities of peat. Taste is very similar to the aroma with peat being the predominant flavour. Tobacco, peat and oak are al very present and clearly the base beer is very malt heavy which handles the Islay casks admirably. The perfect beer for an autumn afternoon/evening. If you can try this do however, it is an acquired taste that you either love or hate - I cannot see there being any middle ground with this one.

Pours with a medium, tanned head (i forgot to write down the colour of the beer...díoh!). Aroma: Malty, a bit of chocolate, esters, red wine, a bit peaty. Heavy taste derived from oak aging, similar to old red wine, red berries, full body and long lasting taste.

Older version as Iíve had this laying around for at least 12-18 months. Very dark brown with a caramel coloured head, smells of alcohol, leather, oak, slight hints of that sharp peated whiskey smell, plums and chocolate. Smooth flavour profile without overbearing flavours, a good mix of the dark, fruity alcoholic flavours of a strong Belgian ale with subtle but noticeable earth and oak flavours. Smooth, complex and understated, very enjoyable beer.

66cl bottle, shared by Chris at Hugiís Homebrew tasting, cheers. Chocolate earthy brown pour. Autumn leaves and red berries in a suave nose, accompanied by very gentle peat and dried fruits. Much more subtle than the Arbeg version, which can stand a few more years of aging to absorp its Islay fumes. Taste is subtle and dominated by the pillowy HQ yeast profile, giving the light chocolate malts and berry notes a texture of a delicate Black Forest Cake, well whipped up and topped by dusty-earthen pure chocolate powder. Benchmark in new wave BE subtlety both in brewing and cask aging.

Super complex and delicious. Pours dark brown/black. Relatively flat looking light on carbonation. Nice peat aroma (not too strong, but noticeable) on top of dark malt, plum, oak, honey, tobacco, and leather. The mouthfeel is on the light side, earthy, malty, grainy, and deep. The smoke flavor was wonderfully subtle. More of a complimentary element rather than a dominate bacon in a bottle. It is rich in flavor and complexity. finishing relatively dry with a slight ash astringency.
