Clear reddish brown with a dense beige head. Spicy aroma of overripe fruit with a light tartness. Full-bodied with burned malts, some fruit and wood with a spicy edge. Fairly bitter finish. Very unusual,

Epices, amertume moyenne, sucres, café, chocolat. Une bonne ’strong ale’ à la limite d’une stout. Je recommande.

Bottle. Hazy deep brown liquid with medium to big light tan head. Aroma of citrus, bread, biscuit, chocolate, raw sugar, spices and grain. Taste is light to medium sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of raw sugar, bread, biscuit, chocolate and licorice. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice.

Dark brown cloudy pour with large very bubbly off white head. Dark roasted malts and burnt sugars mixed with something undefinable for smell. I would say it?s black licorice and smoke, that’s what it is....smoke. Taste is amazing. Complex as hell. Dark malts, cherry like fruits, caramel/toffee, that licorice smoky thing again and chocolate. Flavors all over the place but not unpleasantly. Medium to full body with lively carbo. Wow, surprising beer. Will definitly have one of these again, would love to try one with some age on it.

This why anybody likes to try out alot of different beers. A very surprising brew. First it is tart then it goes to a rich slightly sweet dried fruit and candy flavor to finish with coffee beans and smokey burned malts in a long dry finish. And somehow it all comes together without being a mess. Big smile drinking this.

33cl, De Biergrens 12/2013. Pours an black and brown with an anthracite tinge. Contained chalky nose, some fresh hops and caramel roast emanating slowly. Taste is hard to fathom, but with less depth and complexity than expected: some roast, nuts, chalk, cocoa powder rather than deep chocolate. Suggestion to warm this up to serve with ice cream backfired because of lacking sweetness and surfacing malt and hop bitterness...Enjoyable in its unfathomability but slightly below par according to this fine brewery’s own high standards.

Sample at First Sunday. Pours dark, hazy brown, with a thin, tan head. Aromas of bread dough, caramel, slight sour cherries, and an odd aroma in the background that’s hard to place. The best I can come up with is oysters. The flavor is sweet and malty, with just a little sourness and very little hop bitterness. Medium to heavy body, thick, and a little clingy. This is a very interesting, well made, and tasty beer.

From a 22.4fl oz bottle (660mls?) on 6/1/2014 (Xmas present from Desmond - many thanks). Pours a very dark amber with a small head. Has a lovely aroma of rye bread, caramel, toffee, nuts and a touch of dark fruit. Intense and complex are the words which come to mind when it hits the mouth. There is heaps going on here, with oodles of chocolate, caramel, toffee and butterscotch, more rye bread, toast, some roasty malt, sweet citrus and prunes. Accompanying is a big, lingering, slightly tart bitterness, with just a dash of alcohol. The palate is creamy and the carbonation medium to lively. This is exceptional stuff. Delighted to find another strong Belgian that has more to offer than just a big rep.

Noire opaque, effervescence moyenne, col brun clair abondant. Malts rôtis, chocolat noir, un rien fruitée, un rien moka, un rien réglisse (pour l’amertume). Une bière complexe à déguster au coin du feu.
