22 oz. bottle from Wine and Cheese Place; came wrapped in a tan, stapled paper pack. Dated í07 OKT. 2009í and numbered 5776. Pours a cloudy orange-amber that is more brown in the center with a medium off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, brown sugar, Belgian yeast, toffee, and some mixed fruits. Flavor is equally sweet, with more brown sugar and caramel malts, some underlying fruit, Belgian yeast, sweet bread, and earth. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a sweet, malty mouthfeel. Very good Belgian strong ale.

Enjoyed from a 22oz bomber in a sampling glass. The beer pours a deep dark brown, with a moderate light tan head. The nose shows strong Belgian/German malt character; CaraMunich, Special B, and a yeast ester profile reminiscent of the Abbey Ale yeast strain. Alcohol also comes through in the nose, but seems only to add a sort of rum-like character. The palate is unabashedly malty. Again, toffee, raisons, rum, and dark fruits come through. The aforesaid sweetness stops just short of being cloying; and still may be too much for some. The complexity reminds one of greats, such as St. Bernardus Abt 12 or Rochefort 12. Alcohol peaks through, but again adds a rum-like complexity. Carbonation is moderate, and nicely calibrated. The finish is long and malty. Overall, a great Belgian strong dark, one of the better examples Iíve had in recent memory.

On tap at Bad Apple. Pour is a copper with a thin white head. Nose of dark fruit, sweetness, and a hint of booze. Palate is much the same raisins, toffee, and a bit of tartness in the finish. Interesting.

660 ml paper wrapped bottle, bottle #2199, attached card says bottling date of 13 April 2009. Served in a chalice, the beer pours dark brown with about an inch and a half tan head. Head retention is pretty good, with a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice and malty, the brew smells like dark fruit, brown sugar, toffee, smoked malt and chocolate. The taste is just like the aroma, but thereís also the addition of some nutmeg and coffee flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, itís coating with creamy carbonation. Drinkability is good, itís very smooth and enjoyable. I thought this was a pretty good brew, a nice mix between a Belgian Strong Ale and a stout.

Bottle @ home. Aroma is huge malt with some fruit, slight hoppy note. Flavour is quite bitter, almost an ipa, with blue cheese anf fruit hops and a good malt backbone. Slight herbal note. Good stuff.

Bottle at the Publican. Poured a near clear amber brown with a light brown head that lasted throughout the beer. Aroma had a sweet grain and biscuit note with a bit of backing cereal and a slight spice and light fruit note. Flavor had a slight light fruit note in the beginning with sweet grain, biscuit and cereal taking over. There was a bit of dark fruit an alcohol in the finish.
