[10/8/13] Bottle at my hotel room in Brussels. Opens with a huge gusher. Murky dark orange. Musty aroma with cheese, some barnyard, some vinegar, a bit of acetone and some fruitiness. Sour flavor, woody, funky, a bit smoky, a bit cheesy, with some vinegar and a somewhat bitter lemon peel finish. Medium-bodied. Quite decent and interesting, but pretty unrefined, and gets pretty hard to drink after a while.

Bottle 75 cl, BBE 2019. Pours hazy orange in color with a small whitish head. Leather, cellar notes and notes of funkiness in aroma. Bit of stable. Light tartness, some apples and a bit ripe garden fruits in taste. Extremely easy to drink. Chewy mouthfeel towards the end from the slightly sour wheaty notes.

bottle thnx to bart vanpucke ! small gusher pours amber, good white foam. smell is sour, but more like american sours than it is like lambic... still pretty decent, though ! taste is smoked. aauwtch. did NOT see that coming... sourness is there as well, but smoke-character overkills everything for me . almways, no matter how small. i could finish my glass, but i’ll never buy this ...

A careful pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a three-finger thick (including 1 above the rim of my glass), light tan tinged head. The beer is an amber color that shows a brilliantly clear, bright amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma has a Brettanomyces funkiness to it backed by a fruit and tart character. Musty, somewhat musky, lightly Band-Aid like, but this is backed by an ample fruitiness that reminds me of spiced cider. This has a wholesome, hay like, and fresh, yet to be threshed grain aromatic note to it.

Quite effervescent, and fairly light bodied, the beer is definitely light and quaffable. There is a smoky plastic note here that permeates the palate, though it is not overwhelming. The beer is quite dry, it has a nice tartness that accentuates that apple cider like flavor from the aroma (though this time without the spiced character). The tartness here is somewhat light (especially compared to a Lambic), and has a character to it that doesn’t say lactic acid to me, it isn’t really acetic either, and I wonder if it is not a mix of the two, and perhaps some others. There is a slight nuttiness to the finish, brought out by the malt character that also provides a touch of whole grain cracker character, and perhaps a touch of caramelized whole grain.

This is an interesting beer, not at all like a Gueuze, and I have a hard time understanding how this won any award for being such (per the sticker on the bottle); quite apple like, and the tartness isn’t really all that lactic in character. Still this isn’t a bad beer, and is an interesting example of a sour beer that is not a Lambic. I am definitely a bit disappointed that this is not anything like a Gueuze, but it is certainly a bit more than serviceable too.
