Special version for the Zythos festival. Served from hand pump.

Barley wine aged for half a year on a wooden barrel.

(backlog ZBF 2013, ZO 28). Shared sample, danke Ulli. Smoother blend of vanilla, caramel and whisky notes than the upfront cask nose would lead to suspect. Near-creamy mouthfeel with a spicy finish that could be interpreted as abv burn in a less merry setting. Like myself at this point, I believe this lacked definition.

Dark chestnut with a big off-white head. Rich and complex malty aroma with toffee, dried fruit and a hint of licorice. Sweet malty flavour with slightly sharp alcohol. Notes of vanilla and oak, and a drying finish

Tap @ ZBF 2013. Pours clear brown with a large, frothy, off-white head. Aroma has chocolate, caramel, sherry, strawberry, vinious and toasted. Low carbonation, fat and oily mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, malty, grapes, chocolate, quite warming and sherry-like with some vinious port as well. Lovely.

Clear red brown colour, beige head. Aroma of liquorice, caramel, cacao, chocolate, whisky, korenwijngenever, quite a pronounced spicy touch. Quite bitter flavour, wood, vanilla, malts and caramel. Creamy body. Soft, quite alcoholic finish, red fruits and lots of whisky and korenwijn.

Gerbeer (2567) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 2, 2013
Tap. Pours a dark brown with full head of big bubbles. Aromas of brown sugar and roasted malts but no hops. Very sweet and sugary. Flavors are dominated by brown sugar and syrup. Interested to see how it ages in bottle.

@ Zythos 2013. A dark brown colored beer, with a thick beige head. The aroma of fruits like orange and cherries, malt. some wood. The taste is fruity, cherries, alcohol with malt and wood notes. The aftertaste is sweet fruity with alcohol.

ZBF Festival 2013 - Medium brown colour. Big foamy head. No carbonation, very smooth. It’s a bit of a whiskey bomb in flavour. The finish has nice peppery spice.

Barley wines simply aren’t my style. A personal rating is just that: personal. I am sure this an excellent beer and true to its style. But it’s simply not my thing.

Very sweet thick sirup with a malt and bread taste. Sweet malts aroma. Aftertaste a bit too sweet.

Hand pump sample @ ZBF’13 shared with the RB Belgian crew. Feels like the Jenever barrel leftover used for the VSOP was dumped in this beer. Cuivrée presque ambre, trouble, col beige fin. Arôme est assez impressionnant par la dimension de barrique qui est envoutante. Le bouquet du barley wine reste là en retrait laissant pointer qcq notes de malt caramel. Palais est une toute autre expérience. Ici, j’ai l’impression que la bière a été coupée avec du whisky. La sensation de chaleur d’alcool ne joue franchement pas en faveur de cette bière. Il s’en retrouve que quasi toutes les caractéristiques de ce barley wine sont bloquées par le genièvre. Ce dernier en toute fin de bouche laisse entrapercevoir des notes de caramel, sucre brun malté pâle et grillé. Là, c’est juste de trop.
