Bottle from Whole Foods - Tribeca, New York City. Bottle has "2015" stamped on the label. My pour from bottle to snifter gave me an "off white" colored head of about a half inch. It quickly dissipated. The smell is a somewhat faint smell of hard candy. The taste immediately reminded me of the J.W. Lee barleywines -- moderately thick, sweet...kind of a sipping on sherry experience. Those were some of my early favorites that I’ve since largely moved away from. Ugh...unfortunately, this hasn’t been my style of English barleywine for a few years now. Difficult to judge without being impartial to my changed palate. It’s probably easiest to say, if you like the J.W. Lee barleywines or sipping on sherry, you will like this beer. If you’re taste is more in the vein of Firestone Walker Sucaba, Bell’s Saturn barleywine...barleywines that offer a more complex flavor profile, then you may not enjoy this. This was a one dimensional experience for me. Sorry I dropped US$16 on this bottle but that’s the risk we all take when exploring and looking for the next ultimate taste experience.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2016 Bruin bier met rode gloed. Zoet aroma en smaak. Pruimen, rode druif, beetje eik, kersen, rozijntjes, port, wijn. Volle ronde smaak met warme zoete afdronk. Ondanks de 13 % abv proef je de alcohol nooit. Perfect uitgebalanceerd. Een voortreffelijke dochter !!

Bottle 500ml (2014). Served at cellar temperature. Pours a hazy burnt amber. Head is off white, average sized and lasts very well in the glass. Aroma is very rich and complex with notes of strawberry jam, nectarines stewed in cognac, burnt caramel, maple syrup, oak and tree sap/resin. Flavour is very smooth with virtually no bitterness at all; burnt toffee, raisins, dark cherries, overripe stonefruit, rum, resin and some light toasted woody notes. Full bodied with medium carbonation, thick texture and a long warming finish.

Dark amber / brown with medium beige head. Too sweet for me, but anyway nice malty sweetness, bit fruity sweetsourness and some bitterness with touch of roasted grain later. Sweet aftertaste.

Brown liquid. Almost no head. Powerful aroma of barley. Bready. Barley, bread, hints of caramel. Hints of vanilla in the middle. Caramel and bread in the end. Really silky, smooth, low carbonated, heavy bodied barley wine. Maybe too optimistic grade, but it has huge potential when stay ts year or two in the cellar.
