mike1977ok (633), Netherlands Jul 30, 2009 Hazy dark blond colour with massive foam head. Sweet, juicy aroma reminds me of orange zest. Massive carbonation pushes the bitter, zesty flavour around the mouth.
hobbersr (393), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Jul 25, 2009 Thanks to Savvy1982 for picking this one up for me! Pours a hazy yellow with a large rocky white head. Aroma is very classically Belgian, styrian goldings and yeast. Bananas, mangoes, oranges, lemons, pepper, bubblegum, and white bread on nose. This beer tastes really nothing like the nose would lead you to believe it would taste. There is some initial fruit (pears and banana), but then it goes into a black licorice and tar mid-palate. As it warms some fruit show up in the mid palate through the tar. Nice spicy peppery hop finish. Carbonation is excellent. Nice beer. jrallen34 (123), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 15, 2009 I drank this beer from the bottle into a chalice.
The beer poured beautifully with a huge white, creamy, chunky head that clung to the glass. The beer itself was a cloudy golden orange. It had average to good lacing.
The smell was great, very strong sense of orange, hops, and bitterness.
After this great start with the smell and look I was greatly disappointed. This is not a very good beer. It is very very bitter with a no taste of orange that I smelled and just left me disappointed. Not at all what I was expecting.
alagnak (300), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jul 14, 2009 Pors really cloud yellow, looks exactly like a super-carbonated hefe. Aroma is really pleasant: sweet lemon, a little honey and pepper, the ’classic’ De Dolle yeast and distant hints of hops. Flavor is more of the same, though the spicy hops and yeast shine through. Definitely get some pleasant alcohol heat in the middle, as well. Finishes dry and crisp, high carbonation spreads it over the tongue. Defintely get the pear others mention as it warms a bit and takes on some wheatier/yeastier quality. Well-executed and very high quality stuff, this. Nordcore (266), North of, Norway Jul 11, 2009 Bottle; Apperance; Golden, clear with a huge white head. Aroma; malty, spicy, some hops and alc. Aroma; malt, tar/smoke. Bitter but not a good aftertaste in the mouth. beernbourbon (236), chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 10, 2009 Bottle. One of my favorites. Pour is cloudy yellow with huge white rocky head. Aroma is very Dry hops, champagne, lots of black pepper, lemon, hints of malt, and distant bell pepper. Flavor is very dry: champagne-like, lots of black pepper, Light pine hops, faint spice, and a hint of orange peel. I love this beer, so good in the summer. satan165 (541), River Grove, Illinois, USA Jul 7, 2009 nose of intense yeast, and intermingled hops and wild fruits with a strong pear note. the bottle sounded like a gun when i cracked it and not only gushed but sprayed a couple inches into the air from the neck. once the pillow of cotton candy receded, the beer beneath revealed a dry palate bursting with more pears, and a tart note to balance. more yeast and hops as well. this is the best de dolle i have sampled so far and the first i will soon return to. Savvy1982 (303), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Jul 2, 2009 Bottle. Pours a pale, hazy dirty amber, with a thick, pillowy, sticky white head with gorgeous lacing. Nose is tons of fruit, tropical fruit, bananas, citrus, pears, apples. Bubblegum, hops, belgian yeast. Palate is surprisngly dry and assertive, thanks to an apparently quite aggressive hop schedule. Palate starts quite sweet and bubblegummy, then gets steamrolled over by hoppy bitterness. the bitterness slowly fades to allow the fruit, primarily candied applepears and bananas, to show through again. Very neat, very tasty, quite surprising.
