redlight (1445), Winter Park, Florida, USA Oct 4, 2005 Updated: Feb 20, 2007Somewhat sweet aroma, some caramel, and floral scents. Pours hazy amber with a fluffy white head. Some feint caramel flavors, sweet almost sour in the back, with a crisp dry finish. Very carbonated. Crisp dry finish. Reminds me of XX Bitter, but not quite there. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA Oct 3, 2005 pours out with a giant head that almost over flowed from my glass. taste is different, not that special of a beer. as the previous rater says, this would most likely be an entirely different beer in belgium. kind of oaky flavor, plenty of yeast and malts. sort of hoppy too. eh the worst beer ive had from this brewery. (which means its better than like 75% of the other beers in the world). mullet (798), Melbourne, Australia Oct 1, 2005 At vanvenlo and lunkie’s courtesy of choos. Frankly I never would’ve guessed this was Arabier if I were tasting it blind. It’s not that it was old or bad, it just tasted very different to when I had it in Belgium. The beer didn’t try and jump out of the bottle on me which is rare for De Dolle in my experience, but it poured clear with a big beautiful head. Aroma was quite a lot like Duvel - stewed pears and apples with vanilla custard. The usual Belgian hoppiness had faded. Excellent solid Pils malt base with a nice assertive bitterness. Herbal and creek stone flavours reminded me of Orval minus the Brett. There’s something about this beer and Boskeun that I didn’t fully appreciate when I first had them, but I certainly do now. Nothing is obvious or dominant, but all the base elements are apparent in perfect harmony. Everything is incredibly subtle, yet profound. It’s hard to explain... Anyway this is probably getting a few more points than it deserved based on how it tastes in Belgium. Thanks choos! braudimusprime (75), Boston, Massachusetts, USA Sep 23, 2005 The least complex De Dolle offering is a sweet-tasting amber ale. Huge head may have been a result of the bottle rocking around in my backpack on the way home from the store. Typical spice and fruit flavors are great, but not as unique as De Dolle’s other offerings. Fulkrum78 (165), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Sep 22, 2005 Another hit from De Dolle. I got this instead of Oerbier from Hi Times as a substitute. Very pleasantly surprised by it. Beautiful amber color. Hoppy sweetness to it and prevalent notes of alcohol. Pretty lacing but quickly fading head. jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA Sep 21, 2005 Pours orange-gold with a very Belgian head—large and rocky—and a lot of stuff floating around. Swirling effervescence. Aroma of candy sugar, citrus, Belgian yeast notes, spices (I’m gonna say cardamom and coriander and pepper). The smell becomes almost floral as it warms. The flavor starts phenolic and spicy, with leathery notes. Toward the end, a floral hop flavor comes through and the finish is a dose of surprising hop bitterness and peppery spiciness. I’d almost call it a Belgian Pale Ale.
These De Dolle guys are good.
fluids (364), USA Sep 18, 2005 Huge white head that stays a long time. Like egg whites with bubbles resting on the surface. Hazy honey color. Fragrance has spicey yeast smell. Unlike other pure malt beers I have had the sweet component blends in a complicated manner with the hops. So it starts sweet and ends with a dry bitter finish. Ughsmash (3983), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Sep 13, 2005 Updated: Jan 24, 2009Poured a hazy golden with a huge rocky white head. Saison-like aroma.. citrusy yet sweet, with candi sugar present. Flavor was similar to the aroma with lemon zest noted. Sweet overall, yet very nice hop balance. Spritzy and saison-like on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Fantastic mouthfeel. 7 3 8 5 16
RERATE: Bottled. Poured clear bright golden with a towering cap of white head.. very lively. The aroma was strong and yeasty with banana and black peppery esters upfront.. pale malt backing didn’t provide a whole lot of character. The flavor opened with tangy lighter fruit skins (apricot comes to mind) backed by more light fruits in a sweet capacity.. pepper, lemon zest, and grated dried bananas were laced throughout.. finished spicy with a dry warmth and more light fruit. Medium-bodied with a whole lot of carbonation on the palate.. dry especially at the end.. decent flow, but it got caught up with bitterness and sourness at certain points.
