hefevice (72), Brisbane beer desert, Australia Jun 13, 2005 Bottle. Hazy but luminescent orange with a HUGE merangue like white head that lasted admirably and left heaps of lace behind. Aroma is hoppy citrus with some malty sweetness in the background and a little belgian yeasty funk. Taste is dry at first with a little malty sweetness, but dominated by a big finish of spice and hop bitterness, completely hiding the reasonably high ABV. Also noted a slight off "latex" taste. Mouth is light and a little course. For me, not up to the Oerbier unfortunately, although I am sure I will get plenty of disagreement. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Jun 4, 2005 Bottle: Aroma is fruity, yeasty, and citrusy. Pours a dull cloudy orange with no transparency. Soapy off-white head with very good retention. Fruity and yeasty with a pretty big lemon flavor as well. Rather spicey and hoppy finish. Very acidic. They’ve done better. eboats (887), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Jun 3, 2005 Caramel color in its purest form, one could even go so far as to call it NEW-get. Tremedous off white head that would not diminish. I had to drink another beer while waiting for this one to get to "drinkable" status. Aroma is malty with spices, perhaps some lighter fruits a la pear, peach, and banana. At first it strikes me as quite dry and I am not sure I appreciate that. Flavor is kind of like the peeled rinds from a bunch of lighter fruits as mentioned in the aroma. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with a dry finish. Perhaps a 15 overall, perhaps greater, but who really gives a shit? No real sweetness at all going against the belgian strong ale grain. rickgordon (3285), Göteborg, Sweden Jun 2, 2005 Bottled.
Dark hazy golden with a pretty big white head. Hops and banana nose, also little dewy feel to it. Flavour is light sweetish and has notes of pineapple. Mouthfeel is smooth. Finish is dry-ish and bitterish from Poperinge hops. CapFlu (3480), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada May 25, 2005 (330cl bottle) Cute - my beer has a bowtie! Pours a huge, white, frothy head and a cloudy, sediment-filled, highly carbonated orange body. Nose of orange peel, lemons, coriander and yeast. Very bitter, lip-chapping light Belgian Strong. The flavour is hardly malty - just straight sour notes. Very good though not up to the De Dolle standard... Papsoe (14613), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 20, 2005 (Bottle 33 cl) Another mad brew from "De Dolle". Compared to "Oerbier" this is both lighter and more dry. At the same time it has the rather unusual character of being both tart and bitter at the same time. A beer you only drink if you’ve got time for the head to settle. Lots of time... 140194 jaymobrown (1343), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 17, 2005 Wow, sure would like some beer with that foam. Oh well, still pours very nice with a light yellow pilsner type of look, but with a huge lacy rocky foam head. Light green apple, grass, lemon nose. Taste is a bit spicy, with white pepper, and clovers. Crisp and acidic. Slightly alcoholic warming taste. Nice. atpayne (615), Zionsville, Indiana, USA May 15, 2005 This beer poured a full glass of head. Seriously, no beer at all for about 10 seconds, then it slowly stole back the glass from the full white cloudy head. Nice lacing. The aroma is very fruity; sweet and appley. Sour apple and pineapple come through nicely. Nutty; walnuts in the flavor for a brief instant then a spicey fruity flavor with a fairly active mouthfeel. Diminishing cherry flavor. The sweetness becomes smooth and very inviting while the finish is slightly bitter, sweet, and full.
