3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
11.6 oz bottle into a New Belgium goblet. Bottled 5/2011.
A: Pours a cloudy dark gold color with strong carbonation and some unattractive yeast particles. The head is a bit rougher than I really like in the style; nonetheless it’s about three fingers high, colored offwhite, retaining itself decently. It also has a huge floater in the center, with a much creamier texture. Lacing is sparse but strong where it exists.
S: I first note some white grapes with some caramel, earthiness, and a kiss of lactic sourness. This light fruitness evolves, developing additional tones of orange, apricot, and cherry. The complexity of the fruit esters here are really engrossing.
T: This has a bit more caramel malt than I expected, along with a finishing touch of lactose. Behind this primary flavor lies the fruit notes I loved so much on the nose. Also, I note some grassy hops on the aftertaste; I could tell this would be quite hoppy fresh. There’s an accumulating earthy note that provides some cheesy qualities; some sips are like biting into a stank-ass cheese - and by gawd King, it works here.
M: Despite some of the early sweetness, this is nicely crisp and dry, probably aided by its age. The back end is pretty astringent; a bit more than I like, actually. Otherwise, it’s a very successful mouthfeel, mixing pleasant dryness with a good complexity of flavor.
O: Quite tasty. This would probably be better fresh, but it’s still drinking great right now. Regardless, this is one of those mildly strange beers that really makes you contemplate it. Think of it as Duvel’s slightly loopy but lovable younger brother.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Clear golden, airy white head. Malty aroma, honey, wood and tobacco, floral yeasty notes. Flavour is fruity, slightly rough, floral bitterness (?!). Honey-like sweetness, hoppy bitterness. Alcoholic and rather light. Quite complex and very well balanced.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Clear, dark golden color with lots of yeast sediment floating around, huge, fluffy off-white head. Aroma has classic belgian yeast esters. Floral with some overripe fruits, hay and medium brown sugar. Taste starts on the sweet side with brown sugar, hay, slight caramel and yeast but gets really bitter and earthy on the finish. Seems more like a belgian IPA to me. After the the foam settles, you get some earthy hops as well in the aroma and taste but mostly the bitterness. Medium, soft body with a good amount of carbonation. ABV is hidden very well, making the beer really drinkable for 8%. An excellent example of a well made belgian pale ale.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at home. Lively pour, leaving a golden beer with a massive, rocky white head. The aroma is like a huge IPA, with rich peppery hop and malt. Sweet to start with a huge bitterness to follow. Slightly sugary sappy malt with good balancing bitter, peppery hop. Rich and smooth. Delicious.

33 cl bottle at home. Pours a rich golden colour with a massive white head. Aroma is of earthy, peppery hop and rich grain. Taste is firmly bitter with a good, balancing background of mellow sweetness. Rich on the palate, well carbonated, the finish is dry and bitter. A truly great beer.

Bottle, direct from the brewery, via a friend. Hazy gold, with a few floaters. Big, bubbly, expanding, off white head. Nose has a nutty, grainy, sweet maltiness. Floral, fruity, pungent hop. Soft, fruity esters. Taste is fruity bitter. Soft, floral sweetness. Lovely, soft, foamy mouthfeel. Great depth. More of the pungent hop bitterness on the finish. Lovely beer. Super drinkable.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
11.2 oz bottle. Gushed like a beast! Managed to get my thumb on top and spray at the window until it settled down. Still got about 8 ounces. Hazy golden brown with splotchy lace from the settling foam. Nose is sweaty pits, toffee, grass and light citrus. Oily medium body with fizzy carb. Taste is honey, grass and yeast finishing with bitter orange peel. Almost 2 years old so maybe not at its best but always a crazy experience from De Dolle.
