LilBeerDoctor (306), East Setauket, New York, USA Apr 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours a cloudy amber/brown with barely any head. Aroma of apple and pear fruits. Flavor of crisp, fresh apples, pear, prunes, raisin, molasses, fig, some alcohol, Belgian yeast. A good Belgian strong ale but I’m not too crazy about it.
jhumphries69 (502), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Jul 26, 2008 33cl bottle. This one was a gusher! I opened the bottle and lost nearly 1/3rd of it due to the volcano of foam that spewed forth. Once poured, the beer is a cloudy and dusty-looking gold with a thick white head. The aroma is grassy with hints of lemon zest and peppery phenols. There is also some alcohol and slight notes of toffee from the malts. The flavor is malty with some soft fruit and caramel. There are also some subtle phenols. There is a nice, balancing hop bitterness. The finish is slightly dry with spicy phenols, toasty malts, and a clean but firm bitterness. There is a touch of ethanol flavor in the finish, too. The body is full and slippery with lot and lots of carbonation - quite nicely textured. Overall, a very nice, malty, well-balanced Belgian ale. BuckeyeSammy (345), New York City, New York, USA Jul 20, 2008 The alcohol is completely hidden in this beer, no way its 10%. Complex flavor, spicy. Winter spices are very present, some hops on the tail end. coldbrewky (462), Saugerties, New York, USA Jul 20, 2008 .33L Bottl via sloth. Pours a translucent hazy orangish amber with an active white fluffy active head. Head slowly selttles and transforms itself into an oily off white clingy head in the tulip glass. Nose is of yeast and muted spices. Afterbit is initialy stronger than body but see saws as beer warms in glass to this humid overcast day. Body mimics the nose in its yeasty and muted spice fashion but also imparts a sweet perpperyness that is pleasing to the tounge. Muted corriander and orange peel are coated in malt. Alcohol is seemingly unreported in thi easily quaffable beer. (it hit me 20 minutes later) Lacing is swoopy. Spots of trup and yeast on the bottom of tulip. Pepperyness becomes a skoash more pronounced as glass warms. A nice beer that I probably would not have tried if sloth had not thrown it at me when he visited. Thanks Bertly! You Rock! RomanW70 (284), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Jul 15, 2008 Had at Restobiers in Brussels on 6/22. Pours amber with a thick head. Nose of fark, fruits, caramel, and winter spices. Flavor is much the same, with a sour elemt. Carbonation is med-high. Slightly spicy ion the finish. Anotrher excellent offering from one of my favorite brewers. MuttyD (41), Cambridge, USA Jul 15, 2008 Dark orange/brown color with huge bubbling head. Lots of brown sugar, dark fruits, and caramel in the nose and flavor. Palate is heavier than other De Dolles but still rather thin. Slightly bitter finish and sticky feeling on the palate. Very complex beer.
