Brigadier (1212), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Apr 1, 2006 12 oz bottle compliments of hezron
Shared with hezron and malachi. Smells like orange peels, citrus and cherries with a very faint hint of hops. The thin head sat on a light golden, mildly carbonated body. Very flavorful - there was a distinct presence of hops along with orange peels, barnyard/earthy tastes and grapefruit. Very easy to drink with a great finish. Unfortunately, it is also a little pricy so I’m not sure how often I’ll be trying this one. bp (451), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 1, 2006 (Bottle at Delirium Cafe in Brussels): hazy golden color, malty aroma with a slight alcohol aftertaste. A pretty solid brew with a good name. fluids (364), USA Apr 1, 2006 Huge Huge head that goes quickly. Opaque strong yellow to orange color. Intense Melon Apple nose. It separates from the palate at the tail end and leaves you with a warming burn. MoreHead (355), Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA Mar 31, 2006 huge head, visible particles in a murky yellow appearance. fruity aroma, kind of a apple jolly rancher. carbonated mouthfeel with spice and fruit taste, alcohol noted. nicely done. TheBeerOrg (1563), Kentucky, USA Mar 29, 2006 Updated: Nov 5, 2007Pours hazy light golden with a huge foamy off-white head. Aroma of intense fruity esters, notes of bubble gum, cantaloupe, honey, mango, coriander, and chamomile. Taste has notes of honey, herbs, and sugary sweet malts, and is lightly sweet and sticky. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy bodied with lush, lively carbonation. I bought two bottles of this, the first was pretty hot with a nice alcohol burn, but still scores a 3.9. After three weeks the second bottle was noticably more mellow and scored a 4.3. Give this one a little bit of time to age, but I wouldn’t age them too long. ratman197 (3137), Arvada, Colorado, USA Mar 22, 2006 .345 l. bottle pored a hazy gold with a brown tint and a huge sudsy long lasting white head. Aromas of apples, pineapple, yeast and a hint of honey. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of apples, burnt sugar, pepper, and yeast with a warming sweet finish. SoLan (1369), Orlando, Florida, USA Mar 19, 2006 Ugly brown/bronze. Huge, foamy, sudsy, white head. Aroma of light fruits, sugar, malts, funky yeast, and subtle alcohol. Sugary sweet fruits up front, strong malt in the middle, crisp and lightly bitter hops and alcohol in the dry finish, stand by de dolle funky yeast underlying throughout. Burnt sugar and alcohol aftertaste. Medium/full body, well carbonated. Great after dinner tripel. eczematic (1198), Sydney, Australia Mar 18, 2006 finally opened up the bottle jbrus sent me back in late ’04. thanks john! useby sept 04 - so i guess that makes it 5 years old now. or 4 i dunno. anyway i was curious as to how tripels evolve. some of them seem too flimsy to survive the cellar but this one is robust enough in alcohol and body to work with the slight oxidation. beautiful to look at, a bright pale amber (like, the colour of amber itself rather than the colour of an "amber ale") with the most enormous creamy rocky head that sticks around forever. having only had the calvados-aged dulle teve before i was amazed that this one smells very similar - there’s a definite apple ester in there. i guess that’s why they aged it in calvados casks. brilliant. along with apple i got peach, crisp german hops, rich caramel and brown sugar, and dough and leather from the yeast. very complex and unique aroma. it shows its age once you taste it - the raisiny finger of Oxidation (the 5th horseman of the apocalypse) has tainted this beer. After a couple of sips I decided that this wasn’t a bad thing, in fact it works well. all the bitterness that this beer must have had is gone, leaving a mellow, warm, very fruity and alcoholic and sweet beer. caramel and strawberries and sherry. but dry and with traces of herbal hops in the finish. a delicious tropical fruit tartness lingers. yummy, a powerful and hefty tripel that is a real tripel, caramelly and robust - nothing like the bush blond sort of souped up duvels that you get. i would love to try this fresh.
