Tonight with a few friends I opened a 2004, 2008, and 2013 vintage of this beer. I have already known from previous experience that this beer seems to age exceptionally well, especially for its not particularly very high abv. What is a very respectable and well-balanced stout in the fresh version turns into something magical in the older versions. On the first tasting, I felt the 2008 was the uncontested champion, but as a sipped more, the 2004 seemed more and more a contender. No off-tastes or anything unpleasant even in the ten year old version. What a terrific beer, and there is no better argument for the potential benefits of carefully aging certain beers then this extra export stout.

Thin black brown with translucent edges and robust carbonation. Notes of dark malt, burnt coffee, and sour cherries. Slightly tart and lively from the carbonation. Dark malts, tart cherry, anise, light coffee/cocoa. Belgian for sure...reminiscent of Hercules, but with less stewed fruit, much thinner bodied, and more carbonation. Interesting.

Una delle migliori stout belge insieme a quelle di Struise, qui De Dolle davvero si supera! Gusto molto ricco, di cioccolato e caffé intenso, con sfumature speiate, di liquerizia e nocciola. Corpo nero e impenetrabile, grado alcolico ben mascherato. E’ davvero eccezionale!

33cl in a Trappist glass. Pours an almost black liquid with little head. Very easy drinking for a stout and the aftertaste is almost never ending. Tastes of coffee, and burnt barley - maybe a little too bitter but pretty much bang on. A very good example from such a varied brewery

A wild kind of stout. Some roast malt, something that tastes like wild sour cherry, a little chocolate and a very robust smell all around. Pours black with very huge initial foamy head and some decent lacing. Finishes bitter and sour in equal big parts. A touch of booze in finish. Great foreign stout - getting near the Russian empire. Thick palate, low carbonation. Bottle.

Haven’t had many Belgian stouts and this is about what one would expect from one. Dark body with brown head, loads of head, a gusher. Roasted malt and tart funky notes as well. Taste is somewhere in between a stout and a flemish red, sour finish, also belgian sugar sweetness, cherries. Abv well masked. Cool and interesting beer.

330 ml from Birsciop, served in a snifter. Bottled on February 2013. Pitch black colour, no light passing through, with a huge, frothy, forever lasting dark beige head. Intriguing aroma, with tons of spices (cinnamon, vanilla, liquorice) dark fruits under spirit, sugar cane and a bit of booze. Some grassy hops as well, surprisingly after almost one year of the bottling date. Perfectly balanced in the mouth, with the roasted and chocolaty department on one side, complemented by a sweet, alchoolic and slightly tart/sour quality on the other side. A bit of smoke and ashy sensation on the tongue. Average carbonation, on the higher side of medium body, and oily finish. Some trace of the alchool during the aftertaste, but absolutely pleasent. A classic.
