Amen! This is sex in a bottle—engaging and sultry in every plush, warm sensory offering it makes. Beer pours a nearly opaque, very dark reddish-brown color with a large, frothy, tan mostly diminishing head. The aroma is amazing: malty with heavy notes of roasted grain, moderate notes of chocolate, caramel and coffee; Hoppy with a light note of resin/pine; Yeasty with heavy notes of damp basement and light bread dough and plastic/band-aid; miscellaneous debris includes light notes of raisin and moderate notes of top soil and wonderfully colorful spicy alcohol. The ABV is well tucked away, though. The flavor is heavily sweet, moderately bitter with a long, tummy-warming, moderately bittersweet finish. The body is full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is lively.

Bottle from Chevy Chase, purchased in ’05. The years have been very kind to this gem. Pours a barely-red-tinged black, big bubbles but mild lacing. Aroma has started developing more of that traditional De Dolle acidity that mingles with the caramel, figs, and some roast. Alcohol is there too, but only a mild spicy backnote. Body is full, luscious, like drinking milk chocolate. Big strong dark fruit up front, carbonation helping it from being too heavy. Flavor coasts through the range of malty complexity, stopping at chocolate, a bit of sherry, and finishing with a bittersweet, toasty, booze-laced finish. A world-class beer. Just fantastic.

33 cl, flaske, 9,0 %, nydt på Ørsted Ølbar, 15. september 2013. Rating no 100 på ratebeer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tonight with a few friends I opened a 2004, 2008, and 2013 vintage of this beer. I have already known from previous experience that this beer seems to age exceptionally well, especially for its not particularly very high abv. What is a very respectable and well-balanced stout in the fresh version turns into something magical in the older versions. On the first tasting, I felt the 2008 was the uncontested champion, but as a sipped more, the 2004 seemed more and more a contender. No off-tastes or anything unpleasant even in the ten year old version. What a terrific beer, and there is no better argument for the potential benefits of carefully aging certain beers then this extra export stout.

Dark as night w/thick big mocha head. Nose of cappucino, chocolate, molasses, carmel and a belgian fruitiness I attribute to the yeast. Med-Heavey weight with light sweetness and drying finish. Chocolate, cherry, vanilla, coffee, and slight bitterness mixed with raisen quality. WOW, well balanced, soft and carressing. Awesome beer!

12.10.04 330ml bottle given for my birthday from a non-beergeek aunt, wooo-hoooo!! Black chocolate hued brew under a giant head of hefty bubbles. Very fruity aromas waft about the room as the head dissipates and I note pineapple and vanilla before my face even gets near the glass. Especially fruity for a stout, and yeasty as all get-out with leather and prune aromas. Absolutely knee-buckling delicious from the first sip; I shed a tear, but that might have been the tingle of eff that got me. Concorde grape, leather, tobacco, anise, vinous, dry. Not terribly stouty, but so so tasty. Complex. Very boozy, late choco hints. Oddly, I finish this brew feeling like I’m missing something. Huh. But still, Yum. Yum. Yum.

I was blown away by this beer. A Belgian stout??? What!?? By far one of the best beers and exciting beverage experiences I have had in awhile. Pour a deep charcoal black with colossal amounts of head. Exquisite feel in the mouth with chocolate, spicy, and too many other flavors to write. De Dolle always puts out motivating brews and I will continue to buy every new beer I see from them.

Pours a very dark and somewhat murky brown-black color, even a gentle pour provides a huge brown head of foam. Nice lacing. Bready fruity and roasted malt in the aroma. Full of roasted malt and alcohol in the initial sip. Lots of bold flavors: chocolate and coffee and raisin and toffee . Great coffee-then-chocolate in the finish, initially bitter then sweet in the aftertaste. Then it is grainy and toasted and roasted malt. Now a kahlua flavor lingers and lingers. Almost full bodied, exceptionally smooth, with a great carbonation bite. Served at cellar temp in a Belgian goblet. Awesome beer, with the most complex finish I have ever had the pleasure to experience.

HUGE head, had to let it settle several times before I could pour the whole bottle. Very dark with frothy chocolate head. Aroma is of strong chocolate and coffee malts. Flavor starts sweet with lots of chocolate and tones of coffee. Gives way to a strong berry/cherry flavor and turns lightly bitter with a lasting chocolate/cherry finish. Very very good beer, very complex and lots of flavor with an excellent creamy mouthfeel.
