P-tor44 (887), Anchorage, Alaska, USA Feb 25, 2005 Black with brown hints, awsome head with an unreal staying power, a real beauty to see poured. Chocolate ice cream aroma, soy, rich chocolate power. Very belgian tasting with its big yeast wallop. Unsweeted chocolate, figs, a bit of sourness. Lots of hints that leave me thinking Belgian Dubbel, carmelly with a twinge of sourness and alc to finish. I love De Dolle!
hirigalzkar (46), Stockholm, Sweden Oct 10, 2008 Bottle. Black. Incredible "brownish" head. Smells like sour choclate (in a good way). Complex flavor. Dry. Lots of choclate. Little whiskey. CharlesDarwin (1409), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 7, 2008 33cL Bottle. Light soft cotton, silk, toffee, and chocolate aroma. A really dry, dusty roast note. Maybe a bit of tangy, some Belgian esters, and a nice bit of truffle-liquer. Pours a murky dark brown, with a tall, sparse rocky khaki head. Oooh. Complex. A real rollercoaster of flavors. Starts of airy and explosive with signature belgian yeast profile, a bit spicy and backed with fruit. Then into the chewier caramelized malts, toffees and espresso beans. The darkness ramps up. The some mature complex alcohols and ruby red fruits. Finally, a quick flourish in brief hop and yeast juicyfruit. All of this over a rather light and delicate body. Well balanced, yet rich satisfying complex and delicious. Sorry Tsunami Stout, this is just too good. There really isn’t much wrong with this beer, it’s right on in many dimensions. KnN (311), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Sep 14, 2008 Pours a deep rich brown with a huge tan head. Aroma is nutty, malty, with some chocolate and toasted nuts mixed with a hint of coffee.
Flavor is smooth as silk with just a hint of roasted coffee bitterness and just another little hint of alcohol. This is a very nice stout. JK54B (385), Finland Sep 14, 2008 Dark brownish colour. Pale brown head. Some sournes in the taste. Also some bitter chocolate aromas. Also some prunes in the taste. Tasted at Pikkulintu. bombshelter (348), Washington, Washington DC, USA Sep 11, 2008 Bottle from Chevy Chase, purchased in ’05. The years have been very kind to this gem. Pours a barely-red-tinged black, big bubbles but mild lacing. Aroma has started developing more of that traditional De Dolle acidity that mingles with the caramel, figs, and some roast. Alcohol is there too, but only a mild spicy backnote. Body is full, luscious, like drinking milk chocolate. Big strong dark fruit up front, carbonation helping it from being too heavy. Flavor coasts through the range of malty complexity, stopping at chocolate, a bit of sherry, and finishing with a bittersweet, toasty, booze-laced finish. A world-class beer. Just fantastic.
