Very dark brown color...opaque, with a medium light brown head. The aroma was unique...Belgian candy sugar, whiskey, dark (tart) chocolate, cough medicine, and some earthy tones. The flavor was more of the same with a distinctive roasty/smokey aftertaste. This reminds me of the first batch of Avery The Czar Imperial Stout...with it’s Belgian Ale/Stout characteristics. The feel was a litle thin for me...coating finish, but at the same time kinda dry.

It smells sour, a bit roasty- coffee, in the aftertaste a bit more roasty-coffee. A sour Stout. 11/10/9/11/-/11

Extreme Gushing!!! The beer in the glass is deep black, with dark brown, high, thick and creamy head. It smells very malty, very much like toffee and caramel, also slightly alcoholic. Starts with a slightly alcoholic note, very malty-roasty, intense coffee note. The middle part has lots of coffee, roasted malt and some alcohol again. Very alcoholic and coffey-roasty finish.

Dark brown bodied with a big rocky, fine tan head. Country cookies, hazelnut, yoghurt, resin. Bit sweet. Still a complex and delicate aroma. Full fomaing mouth feel, interesting mix of light bitter, sweet and sour notes. Not constant, but living in your mouth. Underlining with roasted malts, cream and Beglian yeast sweetness. Some spices. You really need a full bottle of this, I think, not just a sampler, to get to the bottom. Quite a special and very well made brew. I like it! (33cl bottle, reasonably priced)

On tap. Pours a drk black with medium tan head. Aromas of light chocolate and roasted malt. A light light, but nice flavors of espresso and dark chocolate. Somewhat smoky and sour.

Originally reviewed: 10/14/10. Bottle picked up at Brawley’s in Charlotte per the suggestion of the lady working there. She said that it was her son’s favorite stout. Alright, let’s try... 11.2oz bottle poured into an odd-shaped goblet style glass. Popping the cap released an energetic force of carbonation, and this quickly became a gusher. Huge layer of foam when I pour this. It takes a few minutes to pour out the entire contents. The color is sort of a muddy dark chocolate brown. Not as dark as expected. I thought it would be more black. No lace left behind. The frothy capper yields scents of mashed apples, some sour notes, faint yeast, and just hints of roasted character. Not entirely what I expected, but I still like it. The excessive gusher should have tipped me off that this would be a highly-carbonated beer. The feel is a bit too spritzy for the style. I like my stouts smooth and creamy, albeit heavy. This one is crisp, sharp, and bordering on harsh. Though it is a bit lighter than expected. This lightness allows me to sip this with greater freedom. The sourness crosses over into the flavor as well. The yeast becomes a big player, but some chocolate comes forward as well. I like the slight roasted quality it has, but the sourness becomes tiring after awhile. Glad I tried this beer, but I probably wouldn’t seek this one out again.

AROMA: strong coffee, dark chocolate, nuts, roasty APPEARANCE: black, brown, frothy TASTE: light sweetness, medium bitterness, umami, PALATE: full body, lively, creamy, astringent, bitter, long finish, OVERALL: intense stout dominated with coffee and cocoa beans, lively and nice astringent finish, really creamy.

330 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours cloudy very dark brown color with a nice 1-2 finger dense tan head with great retention that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some nice soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas of big cherry, raisin, roasted malt, biscuit, herbal hops, and yeast spices. Some interesting aromas, but not anywhere near what I expect for a stout. They have over the top fruitiness with minimal roasted quality. Taste of chocolate, cherry, roasted malt, caramel, molasses, biscuit, raisin, herbal, and light yeast spices. Surprisingly dry on the finish; with slight lingering notes of tangy dark fruits, roasted malt, chocolate, and caramel on the finish for a short instant. Not nearly as robust as I was hoping for it being a stout. Roasted character is not as pronounced as I would have liked. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with pretty much no warming noticed on the finish. Overall this is certainly an interesting export stout. Though I am wondering if I even got what was advertised on the bottle. I will have to get a bottle that has a dated cap in the future, this one could be quite aged. Enjoyable though.

23 Oct 2010 I wrote this: 33cl Brown bottle, poured into a Westmalle chalice. Huge foaming head, tan coloured and big bubbled, below was deep dark ruby red body. The head stayed throughout the review, something I always like to see. Yeast esters fill the nose, add some semi-sweet dark chocolate notes with a background of heavy ground coffee aromas. The flavours followed the smells almost to the letter, with alcohol coming into the frame, which added the final piece to the brews make-up. Well carbonated and easy to drink this is one of the best stouts I’ve had so far.

Bottled. This one is almost all head on a gentle pour. Expected it as this seems to be a signature of De Dolle’s house yeast. Incredible. As it settles the liquid is very dark brown and murky beneath that tan head that stays for a long time. The bright nose is yeasty driven, light sweet, roasty, with hazelnut, pit fruit, and spice. The flavor is similar with the yeast and roasted malts doing a dance. There’s also some tartness in with all the coffee and dark chocolate in the mid-palate. Medium body, good carbonation that turns into a fizzy texture, followed by a roasty-bitter-dry-sticky-light finish.

Bottles @Brugge. Dark. Olof with an amazing tan head! The head keeps longer and then a awesome lacing. Aroma is weak roasted malt. Flavor is quite bitter with chocolate, roasted malt and coffee! Mouthfeel is a long bitter roasted malt. Good one!
