Black pours with a 2 finger, creamy tan head. Huge roast and dark fruit nose up front, some leather, earth, spice, bittersweet chocolate, dense rye bread, licorice and burnt sugar. Flavor is much more licorice forward than the aroma, it’s pretty strong in a very good way, some chocolate, buttered roast nuts, dark fruit, roast, husky grain and burnt sugar in there as well but the licorice really steals the show for me. Palate is a little too thin and a bit too sharp in carbonation for me, but it doesn’t really hurt the experience too much. Pretty good stuff overall.

Look: Pours with huge, thick, darker mocha head. It has a very slow, rock solid retention, leaves a thick layer for the whole ride. Dark, dark brown, some carbonation visible.

Smell: Fresh! Bit of chocolate milkiness in the dominant dark coffee; caramel and candy more hidden but still there. Also some dark berries (wild cherries) and dry fruits, fresh cacao and earthy, spicy notes.

Taste: Dark fruit freshness, great start, acidity well represented. Continues to medium, lively middle sweetness, again mostly coffee driven. Ends with medium bitterness with small boozy spike towards the end. Strong dark coffee dominates in the after but mellows down with more sips.

Mouthfeel: Full body, light heavy, lively carbonation, almost dry finish.

Overall: A pleasant surprise, was searching for a fat stout and the bartender offered me this one, was not disappointed. Rich and could easily slip in the imperial stout style.

Bottle from CBX. Black pour with a large frothy tan head that hangs out through the entire beer. Aroma of bitter sweet cocoa powder, roasted malts, light hints of dark fruits, candy sugars, yeast funk, star anise with notes of spice. Fairly complex nose. Raisin and plum notes enter the mouth, fading into bittersweet chocolate, coffee, anise, yeast with a spicy and slightly bitter finish. Lively carbonation hides the alcohol. Truely complex and tasty beer.

Ah Boston a town free of, well, the LCBO. Bottle from Charles Street, my new favourite place in the world. Ya De Dolle! Pours as a stout should dark opaque finger or two of tan head. Rich smell. Sweet molasses, roast caramel malts, little fruity red wine, touch of booze. Taste big booze, little sour wine, lot of roasted malts, nice balance. A stout brewed in Flemish beer country. Not your standard stout, but that’s OK with me. Suck it Guinness. Tiki you should try this. Tee hee.

Bottle. Deep brown and a little overcarbonated with a huge tan head. Roasty aroma. The initial taste is all alcohol but then it fades quickly. Interesting beer. More chocolatety and malty flavor. Full bodied.

Bottle at Union Jacks. Pours black with a big brown head that has decent retention. The aroma is a bit boozy, some coffee, stove chocolate. The taste has some coffee, cacao, not as boozy as the aroma. High carbonation and a bit dark fruit . Not bad.

33cl bottle thanks to ruigo. Color is dark. Head is medium to large and brown. Body is medium and quite carbonated. Taste is high bitter and low sweet. Aroma is heavily roasted, looks like a coffee, quite dry and light cocoa and chocolate.
