Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. For more information on Oerbier's recent recipe history, see the following article: http://www.bunitedint.com/Products/de_dolle/oerbier-re_evolution.html

Pours clear medium amber with two fingers plus of fluffy light tan head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Nose is dark boozy fruit (dates and raisins), caramel malt, brown sugar, green apple, other stone fruits. (8/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild tart, very light bitter. (8/10) Medium body, prickly carbonation, medium duration finish with a little lingering alcohol warming. (4/5) Quite a nice BSDA, if a bit on the pricey side for where I got it. Very mild considering the beefy ABV, almost sherry-like and quite good for sipping. Almost feels like theres a little brett in there contributing to the mild tartness, but its quite restrained. Sweetness is similarly restrained, and kept well in check by the pleasantly prickly carbonation. Certainly much better than the amateurish label might have you expecting, and having read their writeup, Id like to cellar some for future experimentation. (16/20)

Tastes of raisins and caramel. Not overly sweet as the carbonation cuts right through it. Reddish brown colour.

Poured into stem glass from a bottle. Cloudy Mahogany colour with a generous off-white head. Nose is caramel, raisin, sour apple, dark malts, and brown sugar. Flavour is sour green apple, caramel, roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark dried fruit, molasses, and subtle spices. Awesome Belgian strong ale!

Bottled; poured at home; direct pick-up from the brewery. Thanks Zombier for my brewery lift and to Anna and Joan for renting the car and driving me to the brewery! Poured a lovely baige lacing over a chestnut-brown colour. Aroma is fascinating. A lot of depth here. Wild brett; farmhouse aromas; hey; fresh dough; garden dew and spruce. Some clove and coriander and fruity yeast esters. Taste is ripe plums; burnt caramalisation; gorgeous wild berrys; tart plum; toffee; raisins and biscuit malt. Some wonderful use of brett and a little heavy on the tart. Its a fascinating beer and another example of the wonderful craft which De Dolle is.

The taste and feel is sweet, soft and warm, with hints of caramel and red fruit. The smell is a whole other story though: it smells like sweet strawberry dairy drink, very fierse and sour. The smell doesnt match the taste in my opinion.
