COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. For more information on Oerbier's recent recipe history, see the following article: http://www.bunitedint.com/Products/de_dolle/oerbier-re_evolution.html

When i first had this beer in belgium it blew my mind. Ruby Brown-Dark Brown in color. carmel head. sweet, smokey, luscious. unique. I also had a bottle that i let sit too long (3 years, ouch) and it clearly had turned mediciny, syrupy more like a port (and may have mixed well with a port or certain other dessert wines)

11.2 oz bottle (bottled Jan 2010). Hazy copper/brown with a thick beige head that quickly fades to a thin layer. Aroma of caramel, dates, raisins, earthy yeast and some light alcohol. The flavor is tart, musty yeast up front then the sweet caramel malt and sugar fades in, alcohol is well hidden. Medium body with a carbonation that explodes in the mouth and becomes almost sparkling. Solid beer, well balanced and drinkable.

Bottle. Pours red-brownish with white head. Nice aroma of dark berries, spices, malt and caramel. The taste was enjoyable, a bit sour, cherries, raisins, "wood", and "milk". A very good and interesting beer.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2011 Very dark brown with small tan head. Caramel malts, banana, cake. Taste is very rich, sweet and sticky. Lots of alcohol compensates well and so does the sweetness, with apple. Impressive beer, a little too sweet for me. (Bottle 33 cl, 2,50 EUR & on tap at De Dolle)

Brown coloured beer with larger off-white head and lots of carbonation. Hoppy malty and sweet aroma with touches of fruit. Full sparkling palate. Finish is malty ending bitter roasted and dry.

Bottle, from 1982, at Beerwarming Party. Pours a light, ruby-brown with a bare, filmy white head. Aroma of dark cherry and funk. Flavor is sweet with caramel and toffee, along with tart currant and other dark fruits. Medium bodied with faint carbonation. Finishes with some good sweetness and funk, along with perceptible metallic hints. Very good given the age.

If you enjoy carbonation, this beer is for you. It smelled of cherry, grape and leather and tasted of cherry and fig. It may be kind of base, but I also felt like I was drinking a fruit punch with 7up. The first sip was too cold and the carbonation muted many of the intricacies, but as it warmed and the carbonation dissipated I started to enjoy the beer.
