COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. For more information on Oerbier's recent recipe history, see the following article: http://www.bunitedint.com/Products/de_dolle/oerbier-re_evolution.html

1.5 year old bottle. Dark chestnut brown with a thick, tan, nice lacy head that settles to a thin lasting top. Had to wait as the head was super thick and needed to settle. Super intense deep smell of toasted malt, caramel, molasses and some roasted toasted malt elements. Seems complex and spicy like a whiskey with a bit of alcohol. Nice fine frothy full body with soft carbonation. The taste starts of toasted malt, sugar cane and caramel mixed with slightly sour dark fruit – plums and oranges and a bit of alcohol on the finish. Moves from sweet to sour. Very smooth and nice but the alcohol and the acid sourness lingers. Low bitterness but still nice.

Imported through the SAQ. Pours a hazy copper-brown colour that gives out a red-orange glow. Huge beige head that is foamy, has very, very long retention with some bubbly lace. Aromas of sweet sugars, dark fruity malts, caramel and mild spices. Smooth and silky mouthfeel, almost creamy. Again, sweet tasting with some mild, but sharp hop bitterness that blends things well. Flavours of apples, butterscotch, dark fruits, notes of licorice, hints of cherries and with a tad of tartiness in the aftertaste. This brew has a beautiful sweetness to it that is not overkill, but very well-balanced with many fruits. Gets better as you drink it... slowly.

Poured clear reddish amber with a good fizzy head. Fruity malt aroma, Flavor is malty cherry or other stone fruit. The body is light and the ABV deceptive. Just a hint of bitterness at the finish. Not bad but not a favorite style for me.

This is a really good Belgian Strong, but it doesn’t have that uniqueness that sets it apart. Is fairly dry, has the typical body and appearance of the style, and has nice carb.

2013.01.29 - De Dolle Oerbier - 11.2oz bottle in goblet glass. Bottle cap marked "bottled JUNE2012". Pours a lovely deep brown, dark chestnut perhaps. Thick foamy bubbling caramel head, probably 1.5 inches and takes several minutes to settle. Aroma is malty sweetness and bready Belgian yeast to me. Mouthfeel is medium, a bit creamy, perhaps from the foamy head that is left. Medium carbonation. Taste is nice. Dark malty sweetness, a bit of spice or bitter. Balance of bitter and sweetness. Repeat purchase worthy but not necessarily exceptional. Aroma 7/10, Appearance 4/5, Taste 7/10, Palate 3/5, Overall 16/20

Enjoyed a bottle at Cafe Bruges, Carlisle. Very carbonated, had to swirl in the glass before drinking. no big deal though, it was a wonderful brown ale with mild sourness. loved the glass and yellow man.

A fizzy amber beer with an ephemeral head. The aroma is mild red grape and faint french toast. The flavor is similar to the aroma with a moderate malty presence. Low bitterness. Tangy and warming. A sipper with a smooth finish.
