Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. For more information on Oerbier's recent recipe history, see the following article: http://www.bunitedint.com/Products/de_dolle/oerbier-re_evolution.html

Sample from a 2009 bottle at En Öl- & Whiskymässa, Gothenburg, april 2014. Pours deep dark red, nearly brown with a two finger slowly dissipating beige head. Aroma is malty, with dried fruit, figs, candi sugar, yeast tones and a slight sour touch. Taste is complex with lots of sweet and woody malt and dried fruit, some spices, yeast, red berries, slight bitter hops. Ends dry with a slight woody tartness. Body is medium to full, carbo surprisingly high with sharp bubbles (but that goes well with the slight tart ending), creamy texture. A perfect example why Belgien knows their shit. So complex and drinkable at the same time.

Great beer that is reminiscent of a lighter quad. Raisins, pumpernickel bread, yeast, spice, candidate sugar. Taste is sweet I with a dry finish. Overall good.

Only like this one on draught! Draight at Fermentoren (amazing, as this is only possible to find on draught at the brewery in Esen!). Reminded me of years ago, where we called this kind of beer in Flemmish an ’ice-cream’ : soft, creamy, beautiful lacing, viscose, full bodied. On draught it’s not overly sweet like on bottle. Great draught beer! Next to their Stille Nacht Xmas beer, my ’Dolle Brouwers’ favorite.

In tap at kickbacks. A pungent, alcohol flavor comes through before a sweet brandy flavor with hints of a Flemish red. Not a big fan. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark bread and moderate dark fruit, with a background of mustiness and alcohol. Clear brown with garnet highlights and no head. Taste is a little vinous with a lingering sweetness. Slight floral hops and a moderate low tartness in the back half of the palate.
