COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. Bontus (481) - Waasmunster, BELGIUM - APR 20, 2008
UPDATED: NOV 26, 2008 Bottle from the Dolle. Pours dark brown almost black with a ruby shade when held to a light. Head is creamy beige tanwhite. Nose is typical candyshop sweetness with hints of all sorts of fruits. Aroma is definitely roasted toast, cofee with small hints of cough drop and soy sauce. Aftertaste is filled with yeast. Flavor is bitter and sweet but the bitter takes the lead eventually. Tonguefeel could have been a bit better but overall a very good brew.

[Bottle, thanks Guerde] Pours hazy reddish-brown with a big beige head that quickly dies down but doesn’t disappear. Aroma is fruity (a little plum, maybe), some alcohol, yeast. Taste is a little tart up front, then some grape and yeast which slowly fades into a finish that has what seems like very subdued smokiness, a little chocolate and more yeast. Medium mouthfeel with a long finish. Another good De Dolle beer.

Guerde (960) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - APR 19, 2008
(bottle) Pours a chestnut brown with a large light tan head that retains nicely. Aroma is very dry, with smells of yeast, cocoa, vinous, slight candi sugar, and there’s a hint of cherry skin tartness as well that lurks in the background. Quite an unique flavor of dried fruit and dark chocolate, which yields to an interesting tart, yeasty, and lightly roasted finish. A very different beer, but in a good way.

Pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of plums, raisins, caramel, toffee, and alcohol. Excellent flavor of dark fruits, brown sugar, and carlamel with string vineous notes. Dry and sweet on the finish. Very nice Belgian.

Color: Murky brown, cloudy with foamy brown head and light lacing. Nose: Amazing sweet wine notes. Port-like on second pass. Heavy rancio, almost becomes cognac-like. Cinnamon, clove and caramel. Rich, fudgey oak. Palate: Dry sherry and Cognacais notes. heavy caramel, oxidized oak, firm tannins. Very dry and very rich. Old raisin, prune, rancio, dry, spicy, kiln-dried oak. Succulent finish. Sweet and rich. An after dinner beer.

bottle from bottleshop off grand place. dark amber pour, nice sustained head with good lacing. Roasted malt dominates...a hit of sourness in the finish. I like everything I’ve tried from this brewer.

33cl - Aroma is yeasty and malty. Rusty water and subtle spice. Pours very dark brown with a huge head and great lacing. Flavor has more roasted malts but is otherwise very similar to the aroma. Strong alcohol. Palate is sticky and hot. Reading the reviews, I guess I needed to sit on this one for a few years.

(3/2/08) Bottle (I think) sample at Zythos Bier Festival 2008 in Sint Niklaas. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, dark fruits and some alcohol. Sweet flavor with malt, caramel, soft fruitiness and a dry finish with some alcohol burn. Medium to full body with lots of carbonation.
