Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. Big fruity, strawberry aroma. Heavy and sweet but very highly carbonated, giving it an interesting twist. Flavor is serious strawberry with a bit of old paperback. Finishes very clean almost cleansing with a mild cherry wood flavor.

Bottle. Dark ruby/mahogany with a thick eggshell colored head. Aroma is bread crusts and construction paper. Taste has lots of caramel and apple but is badly oxidized. Bottle is about a year old and didn't hold up well. Substantial booze. Rich mouthfeel and strong carb. Will look for a fresher bottle because this one unfortunately didn't work out.

Bought this bottle at de Bierschuur in Poppel. The beer has a dark brown color and a nice cream colored head with a lot of bubbles. The aroma is very fruity and also has tones of yeast, bread and, licorice and candy. The taste is fruity and start to evoluate into a nice freshness and little sourness in which the tones from the aroma come clearly forward. This makes this beer well balanced. The finish is light sour and a has a medium bitterness, noticable for a while. Bravo to this beer, one of the better strong ales I’ve tasted so far.

33cl bottle. Hazy dark brown reddish colour with a large foamy tan head. Caramel, raisins, yeast and slight sourness. Average carbonation and medium to full body. Taste is well balanced slightly more sweet than bitter with some sour notes. Overall, a very good beer that I would to try again in a more cold weather.

Bouteille. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours extremely dark brown with a copious, tan head. Nose is dried fruits, molasses, dark toffee, light booze notes, maybe a hint of tobacco. Taste is very well-balanced, a little to the sweet side, but not too sweet. Full body, moderate carbonation. Delicious brew!

Sample from a 2009 bottle at En Öl- & Whiskymässa, Gothenburg, april 2014. Pours deep dark red, nearly brown with a two finger slowly dissipating beige head. Aroma is malty, with dried fruit, figs, candi sugar, yeast tones and a slight sour touch. Taste is complex with lots of sweet and woody malt and dried fruit, some spices, yeast, red berries, slight bitter hops. Ends dry with a slight woody tartness. Body is medium to full, carbo surprisingly high with sharp bubbles (but that goes well with the slight tart ending), creamy texture. A perfect example why Belgien knows their shit. So complex and drinkable at the same time.
