COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. For more information on Oerbier's recent recipe history, see the following article: http://www.bunitedint.com/Products/de_dolle/oerbier-re_evolution.html

Started talking to another BA’er about this and then found it the same day. Beautiful frothy 4 finger head with an aggressive pour. Appearance is a bit cloudy, amber, iced tea middle color. Froth settles into nice foam. Nose is fairly typical. Lots of Belgian yeast, candi sugar, citrus mixed with fruit and a hint of moss. Taste is a bit maltier than expected. Lots of Earthy, yeasty bread overtones. Some phenolic banana, and hints of fig. As it oxidizes I’m getting some cloying sourness. Finish and aftertaste is a little dry, sour. Feels syrupy and fairly high carbonation. Not as "hot" as many fresh Belgians. Aging could mellow it a bit, but it doesn’t seem carbonated enough to last more than a year or two before going full-on treacle. Not bad. Would like to taste their version of a Quad.

Bottle. Good, full aroma. Very nice appearance. VERY special flavor. I can’t really say that I can identidy the taste, but it’s a bit sour and very different from anything else I’ve tasted. Nice, smooth mouthfeel. Overall a very well-brewed and interesting beer, albeit not one of my personal favorites.

Beige coloured plentiful head, neither dense nor persistent. Dark brown and cloudy in appearance. Alcoholic aroma, like cognac or porto and some wood. Alcohol again in flavour, with a huge malty sweetness, full bodied and tart. Robustly carbonated. I seemed to recognize some licorice and woodish flavour. Delicious, IMHO.

In the beginning very bitter, later on fruity. I bought this one in the brewery in Esen after riding 35 km by bike and it was worth it.

Murky brown beer with creamy lasting head. The Aroma impression is bread- and winish with citric notes. The taste is very malty and cakey. The aftertaste ends in well balanced bitterness. Carbonation and alcoholic touch is superb!

Wow, is this a great beer. Now granted, this is my first exposure to Belgian beer, but it sure won’t be the last. It produced massive amounts of a tan head on the pour, even with a slow pour at a 45’ angle. Dark fruit to the nose and a rich nutty flavor that completly hides the 9% alcohol. This beer tasted great right from the refrigerator and as it warmed to cellar temperature. The alcohol warmth only came it as it neared room temperature. It did not strike me as all that tart, as many have noted. One of my favorite beers to date.

Found this bottle sitting in the coolers at firkin... Really not good at describing a beer of this caliber/complexity- all I can say is try it! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
