rmalloy (177), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA Jul 1, 2007 My bottle was probably a little older, because the bottle fermentation had resulted in excessive carbonation. Nonetheless, the taste was all there. This was a very rounded beer, without sharp aromatic notes. At the core was a green apple element similar to that in lambics, but not nearly as sour. This flowed into chocolate and raisins. It was actually difficult to separate components out of the delicious continuum. A little bit of yeastiness and then the elegant hops. Minutes later I taste the remnants of an apple and some mouth-cleansing hops.
Beers like this put American beer to shame. This is craftsmanship! It’s not a test of who can put the most malt and hops into the brew.
jcurtis55 (16), Plainfield, Indiana, USA Oct 7, 2008 Wow, is this a great beer. Now granted, this is my first exposure to Belgian beer, but it sure won’t be the last. It produced massive amounts of a tan head on the pour, even with a slow pour at a 45’ angle. Dark fruit to the nose and a rich nutty flavor that completly hides the 9% alcohol. This beer tasted great right from the refrigerator and as it warmed to cellar temperature. The alcohol warmth only came it as it neared room temperature. It did not strike me as all that tart, as many have noted. One of my favorite beers to date. mirjukka (436), LOHJA, Finland Oct 4, 2008 bottle 330ml 7€ shared at Kaunis Kampela with FatPhil& Anna 290908 hazy dark brown Taste Kick of sour and heavy fruity esters tickling carbonation hops bit sticky. Maybe need a re-rate. CaryTheDude (283), Ripon, Wisconsin, USA Oct 1, 2008 Crushed with Jakebra. Highly carbonated creates a great mouthfeel. Reminiscent of a kinda sparkling little kids wine on new years kinda stuff on the nose. A pleasant beer, but not incredible. cbeers21 (408), Miami, Florida, USA Sep 28, 2008 Stunning chestnut brown pour with luscious pillowy head. Gorgeous. Brandyish toffee, fruited nose with a green apple boozy cherry quality. Vineous body with a figgy chewed yeast and salivating tartness developing mid to late palate. Thies yeilds an earthy toasted fruit finish. Layered flavors and nice complexity. All together this brew brings the funk sauce. ... Nice. Trev (541), Lakeville, Minnesota, USA Sep 21, 2008 pours a very hazy orangish-brown with a massive foamy brown head.
dark fruit, light yeast, some sweet cola-ish caramel and molassess.
Mouthfeel is intensely carbonated at first.
Flavour is dark nutty malt, sweet again with a hint of cola going into a pretty tart finish. No sign of the 9%...
