Oerbier means original, from the spring. This beer has been brewed in small scale (5 gallons). Oerbier is brewed from no less than 6 malts. Poperinge Golding hops in flowers and a special yeast which makes it a little tart, especially with aging. At the brewery we have excellent cellars which have a constant temperature of 8°C and allow Oerbier to age at its best. After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it should have been blended with wine … Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 7.5 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wallpainting found in Spain, (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30,000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, going on with the tradition. For more information on Oerbier's recent recipe history, see the following article: http://www.bunitedint.com/Products/de_dolle/oerbier-re_evolution.html

Pours nearly black, thick with a luxorious fluffy and sturdy tan head that recedes fairly quickly, leaving loads of sticky lace. Aromas are a complex melange of malts, bready yeast, strawberrys and bananas, newsprint, coffee and alcohol. Flavor is remarkably full bodied with brown-sugary, molasses-laden malt, peat, brandy, port wine, caramel and milk chocolate, raisins and a throat-warming head-bang of alcohol. Finish is soft and fruity, although zestily bitter. Soft, silky and thick on the palate. A pleasantly, surprisingly new twist on a stronk ale that wouldn’t mind being called a barleywine either.

UPDATED: NOV 23, 2007 Hazy dark ruby with a large off-white head. Another very yeasty beer from De Dolle. Very fruity character (wild berries, strawberries), candy and liquorice and cream caramel dessert. Some oak a little sourness touch in there too. Another reason why De Dolle is one of my favourite brewery. I had it on tap at the brewery and served by the brewer himself. I felt like a groupie with a back-stage pass to the Mötley Crüe dressing room… without the dirty sex part.

Light alcoholic warmth from the aroma. Very spicy smelling. Some cinnamon or allspice qualities to it. Moderate mouth feel. Light sour twinge in the upfront flavor with caramel, chocolate, dark fruits, nuts, port, everything! Color is cloudy brown with a lightly tan head.

Wow, another masterpiece by De Dolle. Nutmeg and sour apples in the nose. Very lively carbonation that fills up the body. Pours thicker than most imperial stouts and looks beautifully like impenetrable shoe polish in the glass. Tastes very fruity, very rotten-citrus spicy. Absolutely fantastic.

Wow. Really enjoyed this beer. Malty and sour. More fruity then the Arabier. Love the sour and carbonation mix. Hard to tell if I am tasting a hint of chocolate or caramel. De Dolle makes great beers.

(.33cl bottle) Pours a chocolate color with thick tan head. The carbonation is huge. I did pour the sediment rather than leaving the sediment in a separate glass. Incredible aroma of yeast and bread. Nice caramel flavor with chocolate tones and ripe bananas. Slight sourness at the end. Very complex beer that leaves you licking your lips. This is a great beer!

UPDATED: APR 11, 2006 powerful. chocolate coated raisins, coffee, stacks of yeast, dried apricots. very smooth, rich, yet dry and complex in finish. a bit of gingerbread too. trailmix in a bottle. oh yeah rer8: well that’s nearly 4 years since i last had this beer. and it’s still good. this bottle had notches for "houdbaar tot 10/2001" on the label, but "10% 2005" on the cap so have no idea how old that makes it, but it’s old. has spent 25 months under the house and it’s goin good. the usual amazing gigantic fluffy head that settles into a layer of almost widgetlike cream. beer is a clear magenta. aroma is lots of aromatic melanoidiny malt, toffee, some flowery/herbal noble hops of some variety, and a bit of medicine and phenol action. flavour wise a very complex blend of malt richness AND tart, dry hoppiness - not so much bitterness from the hops as just a herbal dryness. this is all supported by a slight sourness like in slightly underripe fruit. or dried apricots. a delicate chocolatey undertone sticks around with some warming alcohol. yummy. i have had some absolute motherfuckers of de dolle beers and some absolute stinkers. this one is one of the former.

Nice bouquet. Malts, brown or candy sugar, plums. Light spicy hops. Cloudy copper-brown with big foamy off-white lacing head. Heavy watery body with med-light carb. Great taste. Sweet throughout, especially to start. Brown sugar, alcohol, candied fig & vanilla. Finish is bitter & just right. Fruity vaporous & light bitter after but not cloying. This is a very good beer.
